Well, I'm a believer
« on: January 29, 2007, 03:57:44 AM »
in the power of the 44mag and My Thompson Contender. One shot at 119yards, through the neck and snapped
the front leg in half. But I had two different rounds with me, one solid soft, one hollow point both 240's. I had the soft
for hogs, and the hollow point for deer. I shot the deer with the solid. A 1/2" hole was all the damage it did with the exception
of the leg. The deer flipped when it was hit. My 300 wont flip a deer like that. Note to self: make sure which round is chambered
for what animal. By the way, I was aiming for the shoulder when it moved I shot at the same time. Have now hung up the 300
for elk only.

What is the length of your 44cal barrell?  Congrads on your deer.

Nice shot. But your 300 has a hell of a lot more power at 120yds than your 44 mag.

But the damage is a lot worse with ballistic silvertips. Besides the longest shots where I hunt are 200 yards.
Most of them 150 and less. Thats why this setup is great for me. Just wish I had had the hollow point in
for the deer, it would have died quicker. I dont care for the animal suffering anymore than ness.  We made a quick
finish with a 17HMR.

17HMR thats an interesting choice.
At 120 yards you had around 900ft/lbs of energy compared to about 2900ft/lbs with your 300(w/180gr) .  Thats a big difference.  How the heck did you break its leg by hitting it in the neck. Bullet must have made a wicked turn.

Were you using ballistic silvertips with the 300 that were factory loaded?  Those are made for large game.  I lost a deer several years ago due to 0 expansion...tracked it for miles and miles, never found it.

I can't wait for my damn gun to get here so I can shair in the excitement you're having.

Yes, they are factory loaded. And the damage they do inside of 150 yards is unbelieveable. I have had them make a 6" exit hole. Way too much damage. And at 200+
yards I have seen them have a 2" exit hole. You tell me??? But still, with the light wieght and conv. of carrying the t/c, 14" barrel and all, it sure beats a rifle. Going into the
thickets where the hogs are is alone a big difference. You just have a broader terrain that you can hunt.
