Handi in .280 rem.

Anyone have much experience with the Handi chambered in .280.  I want to shoot 165gr bullet, will it accurately? If not any suggestions? 30-06 or .308. Now I have a .270 and shooting 150gr bullets but want a little more knock down without a sore shoulder.

Are you just using it for white tails? If so you really don't need any more knock down power. My father uses a 270 witha 130 grain speer bullet for every thing he shot 3 whitetails with it so far up in Canada the biggest over 300 pounds and scored 170 4/8 green all one shot kills just bang flop no running no kicking just dead. Maybe the lighter bullets have a little more in the shock department I really don't know. But the 270 is a great gun.
BTW: From what is said here you can't go wrong with the 280 rem.

I just bought a 280 handi. I have not shot it much yet. So far I have been able to get 1.5 inch groups. From what I hear on the
this site is 140 grain bullets are the cat's meow for handi's PM  MSP ret. He is the one with all of the 280 info. HE has 2

luckily it's not the case for many of us, but the .280 is still as great, accurate, and versatile as it is....<><.... ;)

I think the handi 280 would be a great elk gun. We backpack hunt The handi 280 would save me about 1.5 lbs coming from rem700 7mag

I have a 700 in 300 Win I dont think the handi with a 26 inch pipe is lighter But it sure doesnt take up as much space

No, the .280 Handi with the 26" barrel is not a light gun.  I have a 2.8-10 Aetec on mine, and it's not as "handy" as the other Handis I own with 22" barrels.

 That said, I've yet to work out a 160-162 load for it, but it has put 3 145 Speer spitzers into .466" at 100 yds, and that load (a near max load of IMR 4831) has killed my last 3 whitetails at ranges of 50 to approx 225 yds.  I will still try the 160s though.

 The .280 is a great round, but even in the 3000 fps range with 140-145 gr bullets I don't know if you'd see a huge difference over the .270.  The 145 bullets don't "knock as big a hole" as the 165 30 cal bullets I'm used to, but they shoot flatter and certainly did the job.

I never got to hunt with mine before I sold it to nomosendaro...but...here's what I got with 2 different 140 grain factory loads...The first is a 10 shot group with the Remington 140 grain core locs...the second is with Federals Trophy Bonded Bear Claws...which should work fine for elk...IMHO..





I think it's one of the best barrels available for the Handi...You be the judge...
