What do YOU use...Bifocals,Single Vision,Tinted???

I know the subject of eyeware has been discussed before...Just need to know some recommendations from those of you with OLD EYES, like me. :o
I noticed during deer season that my photo grey lenses were not always a good thing.  Especially in low light when you're panning between the clearing and into the woods.  I have decided that I should get some glasses "just for shooting and hunting".  Question is, is there a preferred tinted lense that would work well for this....what color.
I will always have the bi-focals in case I need them.  Mainly thinking of tinted single vision when deer and turkey hunting and walkin' the woods for rabbit and squirrels.  Thanks guys.

Hi Cook:

I wouldn't go tint or anything that cuts down light transmission. I have enough 'floaters' to do that for me and so probably have you. I would go blended bi-focal for all purpose use. Works best for me. ;D

Yellow tint is really good, It seems to make everything brighter, Polorized lite green and rose collored work ok also, You'll find yourself wearing the yellow ones for more than just hunting I think. I should wear bi focals but I don't yet, they are aggravating at best, and my eyes arn't bad enuff to need them in the woods yet.  8)  BTW Yellow dosn't cut down light transsmision if anything it improves it, Just look at the coatings on scopes.

I too had problems with tints on my glasses. For shooting and hunting I have gone to a clear
lense. I also had the focal point changed for scope use. (They can move it over for you.).
There was just a discussion on this subject on another site. I believe it either Benchrest.com or
rimfire central. Check both sites. There was a good discussion with some professional feedback.

Ditto what Bob said, yellow lenses adds contrast, I've worn clip-ons while huntng and they make a world of difference. I've been wearing progressive lenses for about 15yrs, they work extremely well for me. Used to have photograys, they weren't the best for hunting unless you're shooting in bright sun all the time, but for woods hunting, they left a lot to be desired.

Lense coatings are used to cut down surface reflection that results in abour 4% per side transmision loss. If you can find bifocals with anti-reflection surface coatings you will enhance transmision by about 8%. Scopes and cameras have severl lenses so coating to avoid surface reflection loss is important. But probably any of the coloured glasses cut down on transmission. This you don't need ;D

Anti-reflective(AR) coatings are great for their intended purpose, but they're very fragile and scratch easily, I tried them on my first pair of polycarbonate(PC) lenses, they were scratched severely within 6 months with normal care, I had the coating removed and have since not had the scratch issue with PC lenses, I'll never, ever use AR coatings again!

Yes the coatings can be fragile and for 8% increase in light transmision they are hardly worth the trouble.

These old eyes use Rudy Project Ekynox SX glasses (http://www.rudyprojectusa.com/products/sunglasses/styles/ekynoxsx.htm).
I had my eye doctor write a presciption for "driving" lenses, which is the distance only portion of my progressive prescription. It took a little tweaking to get the scope mounted with the right eye relief, after that they work great.
This is a pricey set up to buy, but since the outer lens is removable and there are multiple colors and tints to chose from, you have, in effect, 3 or 4 pairs of glasses to accomodate variable light conditions.
I use these as my daily driving glasses, cycling, shooting and fishing.  I mostly use the polarized lens, but have found the light red and yellow colors to be effective on overcast days.
Not everyone will like the styling, but the wrap around works well when blasting up the lake in my buddie's hot rod bass boat - minimal tearing at 60+ mph.

this is a good topic for a lot of us with old eyes!
Mine are polycarbonate with progressive lens.  I too have the AR coating but will probably not do that again since they get scratched so easily.
It is always a little tricky for me using both binos and scopes since my prescription is very finicky, but I get adjusted to it although it takes a little longer than I would like to get things focused or get in a position where I am getting the best view through my scope.

Agree with quickdtoo about AR coating. My one pair lasted about three months but welding is rough on eyewear. I wear photogreys because the sun is so bright here. They don't work well in low light because they retain some tint. I just take them off at night.

I have blended bifocals with scratch resistance.  I have thought about getting a pair without the reading aid part as I do very little reading in the woods.  I have run into difficulties when walking over uneven terrain and getting my head positioned wrong so I was looking out of the wrong part of the lens.  That can result in a nasty fall or tumble and I am getting to the age where I don’t need that.  I also have progressive lens and have had no problem with that.  As mine are over five years old I really need to get some new ones but as a new set is about the price of a new gun or in some cases two….

Good topic.Sure glad I read about the AR coatings as I'm getting new specks next week,and WAS going to get that added.So thanks for saving me on that one guys!
I've had the transition lenses in the darkest they make for last 4 years.don't think I'll do that again either.Had the lighter shade before and may go back to that.

I've gone back and forth with the transition lenses - Next purchase is going to be another try on a frame that accepts a clip on sun lens.  The transitions need UV to darken, which you don't get inside the truck cab, so they're worthless as driving glasses.
I like the AR coatings - just don't use ANY paper products to clean or dry the lens - cotton or microfiber cloth are the only two things I let touch my lenses.  I've had to use Rudy's replacement program just once - that was for a pitted lens, not a scratch.

I clean my lenses by spraying them with an optical cleaning solution that's basically water, alcohol and a little detergent, then rinse with water and dry with a clean cotton t-shirt, have been using this method for too many years to recollect, the AR coating still scratched, I don't have enough bad words to use in my opinion of AR coatings on eye glasses >:(, and my optician agrees, he won't use them either, just wish he had told me that up front!! ::)

I have prescription recreational style wraparound glasses, that I wear while hunting, snow machining, 4-wheeling, boating, or flying.  I have two sets of lenses, one polerized sun glass lens, amd the other untinted glass. They are not bi-focal, they are my reguler perscription, my other glasses that are bi-focal has just plain glass with no correction in the bottom.   We have so much sunlight during the summer, and snow all winter and spring that I need the sunglasses.  Then in the late evening I put in the clear lenses.  I do have reguler bi-focal glasses that I use while driving, that is the only time I wear them.  Around the house, or yard I never wear them.  In fact my perscription is so light most people don't think they are perscription.  A few times guys have grabbed them and wore them half the day and never knew the differance, thinking they were just plain recreational eye protection sunglasses.

I do have problems with reguler open gun sites tho.  I can not focus one the target, front site, and rear site at the same time.  So therefore I use peep sites.

Tri-focals, clear plasic with lines. I tried the blended bi-focals and got too much peripheral distortion. My eye doctor is a hunter/shotgun shooter and understood my needs, he hooked me up with the tri-focals, no more stumbling through the woods, no more blurry sights. I use clip on sunglass lenses and am quite happy.

No line progressives. I've worn glasses since I was 5. I stuck with glass till it got too hard to get the lenses ordered. They were heavy but, they didn't scratch by looking at them.

I have found that a #4 or#5 grey tint is the best for all around outdoor use, when the sun is out. Cloudy days, clear only.
As for coatings, none are worth a nickel, NONE.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions and input, everyone.  This may end up getting the economy fix.  A PLAIN JANE pair of regular single lense prescription glasses from Wally World(I get an Associates Discount)  and clip on sunglasses.  Therre is a Rudy's dealer less than a mile from my home, but I am betting they are way more $$$$ than I can afford.  I do have experience with the AR coatings and you guys are right on...not worth the money and they scratched within a month.
Thanks again for all the ideas and suggestions....VERY HELPFUL.
