bulk ammo

anyone ever try the bulk ammo from Cabelas? not the wolf brand, the stuff labeled as Cabelas. I see they use SPBT Hornady bullets. Was just wondering how they shoot in your rifes, and what the muzzle velosity is, what kind of brass they use in them, etc.

I purchased the 243 vmax after I got my Ultra and was happy with it's performance. The ammo I got was produced by HSM and they won't tell the powder componant used. The brass was Federal.
My experience was positive,, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy more if I needed ammo.  I've since started reloading and have found I can tune a more accurate load myself for my barrel.

I looked at their bulk ammo in 243 last week, but for the money, its cheaper to stock up on their price for Federal PowerShoks- if they shoot well for you.

It really depends on what caliber you are looking for.  I have not seen the .223 cheap enough to justify me buying it.  I have been using either blackhills reman. or ultramax reman. for my gun.  If you search around the web or look in different stores I have found it down to about $.40 a round for the ultramax with 50 gr nosler bt rounds.  They are super accurate in my .223 synthetic handi with the standard 22" barrel in stainless.  I have read some things about people knocking it for being once fired brass, but you can reload brass several times as long as it is not beyond limits.  I am a little anal and usually look over all my rounds before I take them to shoot and just get rid of anything that looks rough.  I have never had that with the once fired, but have had to on some bulk loose pack ammo I have bought in the past.  Plus most of the ultramax I have purchased was winchester brass, some rem, and a tiny bit lake city.

There hasn't been a case separation report for quite a while, but there have been at least 2 reported from different shooters here using Black Hills reman, the problem being traced back to the brass being once fired in military weapons with sloppy chambers that basically ruined the brass for reloading. But, since those happened a while back, maybe Black Hills got a handle on the issue with better QC. It does shoot very good in mine.

was at Cabelas yesterday looking for .243, but they did'nt have any. All the other stuff was priced at $22 and up. prices keep going up on ammo I'm gonna have to start re-loading. was thinking if the brass was good in these bulk packs, there be enough to get started in reloading

  I had read the same reports on a few different places, and that was the jist of what I read.  I personally haven't heard anything that was more recent and of the rounds I have shot there were no problems.  Like most things I do, the day something goes wrong is the day I will no longer buy it.

Aldar....I too am starting to look into purchasing a kit to start reloading and may I suggest the reloading forum on this sight if you haven't been to it yet.  I have started saving all of my brass and following advice from hear and others, have purchased the lyman manual which should be here any day as a start to my endeavor.  As far as the bulk packs of ammo, most should be o.k.  I have purchased lots of bulk ammo for my AR and it really depends on how it is packed.  If it comes in an ammo box or other pack that is not set in individual boxes there is a chance some will be marked up or dented.  At the same time I have orderd bulk rounds in boxes 1,000 at a time and only had to not shoot a handfull out of the whole thing.
