nef rant
« on: January 27, 2007, 07:21:12 PM »
I really like H and R/NEF products.  I've owned several, right now I'm shooting an old H and R 30/30, great rifle. I'd sure like to have that 45/70 target rifle.
But what's with NEF's website? Am I missing something or is there really no way to email them from their site? Seems archaic.
So I wrote them a letter asking about availability of .357 barrels.  NO response.
And, why do they only bring out the .357's sporadically?   I hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong.  I've got to be missing something.
On the plus side, I like the new .45 Colt rifle, but I hope it doesn't have the manual safety I've heard about.
Sorry if this sounds negative, but I just had to rant. There's a lot of potential at NEF. Good American company.

Welcome aboard!! You shoulda checked here first, their email addy and toll free number are in the FAQs and Help sticky which would be a good read for ya, lots a good stuff in there. The .357mag barrel is available as an accessory barrel only, it's on their acc list, several members have recently got them.

Last time I looked I didn't see the .357 barrel.

It's been available for quite a while, but you're right, it wasn't on the list, but we knew it was cuz they made a run of 100 barrels a year or so ago and started offering them again. ;)

Welcome to the Gbo forums, you should get a 45-70 every body needs at least one if not two.
Are you on or near the border with the handle you use? Good luck! Marv.

Datil, thanks.  No, not too near the border, I'm in Houston, but it seems like all I have to do is sit still and the border comes to me.
I liked Nueces for a name but some claimjumper already took it.
I'm wanting the new H&R Buffalo Rifle (?), you know, the target 45-70.   Man, that is a good-looking rifle.
Is it true H&R is putting a manual safety on their new rifles?  If so, I'm putting that 45-70 on layaway ASAP.

The H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic is a .45-70, the 1871 Target is a .38-55. There's also a new .45 Colt Carbine coming out next month.

No H&Rs have a manual safety that I'm aware of, they don't make note of it on their news page, and none of their rifles show a safety, why do you ask, what reliable source gave you get that idea?

Tim:

Will they offer the .45 Colt barrel?

Or will it have to come with a whole new gun?

Rifle first, acc barrel later, late spring or summer, as usual. ;)

Well, I looked everywhere about the manual safety, it was on the 'net, some other site.  Couldn't find it, sorry.  It was a story about the 2007 SHOT show, somebody as I recall mentioned it was on a new NEF shotgun and he hoped it wouldn't become a feature on the rifles. They didn't show it. They were reviewing the new .45 Colt rifle.  Now, I'm not sure of this at all, didn't want to spread rumors, that's why I'm asking - does anybody know anything about this?  If somebody wanted to start a rumor it sure would be easy, I mean Marlin did put them on the lever actions (unnecessarily in my opinion), Rossi has 'em, etc. It does not sound unreasonable to assume H&R might do it.
Anyway, I didn't mean to start a fuss. Next time I'll make note of where I heard it.

I would gladly put up with a pesky safety if they would do away with the transfer bar and let us have a real trigger/hammer assmebly. It's hard to get things tuned just right (at least for me) when I'm trying to work around a transfer bar. If I make the trigger break too light I don't pull hard enough to keep the bar in place :(

At least that's my personal opinion. Maybe one day I'll machine myself a new assmebly without the bar in the way ;D
