NRA Range Safety Officer course
« on: January 27, 2007, 01:52:47 PM »
I just finished the NRA Range Safety Officer course I took this so I could help at the matches we’ll be having this spring and was wondering if any one else has done so and if any problems were encountered with patrons and unsafe gun practices just looking for a heads up of what to expect

I have been a state qualified firearms instructor for over ten years.  I am still trying to get my NRA certification and am still scatching my head as to how to do this.  How do I go about getting this course???

forgot to mention I live in the Hampton roads section of Virginia.

Our new range has a certified NRA instructor and he need RSO and held a class the manual and test came from the NRA he going to conduct all kind of class in the future so I guess the answer you need  is maybe you need to contact the NRA at 703 267 1423 and get the course on a home study basis they do that also if you’re a NRA member there is a discount I wish you luck

I don't have those certifications but I did work as range master at Sembach AFB many years ago. The safty problem's I ran into there were caused by people that were simply unfamilur with firearms. It got scarey at times. But you are talking about some kind of matches, which suggest's shooters with some knowledge of firearms. It only suggest's it, some may be new, some arrogant.

Even some experienced shooters have problems now and again. The biggest problem is they become to familur with firearms and become careless where they point muzzles and have a tendicity to assume all weapons are MTY, even their own. This does not apply to everyone of course, thankfully not most. Keep in mind, familuarity breeds comtempt.

Another area I had to deal with firearms safty was as a field trial judge in shoot to kill trials. I had a rule of my own that no guns were to be carried in my field with a round in the chamber. I got a lot of grief over it as many people felt they were more than safe with a firearm, grumbling was the order of the day when I judged. But while I was doing those trials, two people got shot, not seriously but shot is shot. Neither were on my field. The point here is that the more experienced shooters sometime's do figure they don't need you to tell them what safe is. When you are the instructor, it's your parade, lead it! Should someone cry about your safty rules, that's THEIR problem, it's YOUR rules.

For the most part I found the vast majority of shooters more than coperative, even if I had them do something they didn't understand. That was easy to deal with. There is a reason for everything I do and if someone ask's I tell them. "Because I said so" or "because those are the rules" is never an answer that's well taken. Eliminate the argument by having a reason for everything you require. Keep in mind that some people have huge egos and you will have to deal with them. When it comes to range safty, don't be an a$$hole but don't bend!

I said, "....for everything you require". That get's back to leading your parade. Requirements are requirements and not open to discussion. Make sure they are fair, reasonable and promote safty. When you walk onto my field, you follow my rules or you leave.

Not sure if this was what your looking for but there it is.
 Even a blind squrrel find's an acorn sometime's![/quote]

Thanks for the reply.  I will give them a call and see if I can't get on board with this certification.  ;)

I am a certified NRA instructor and RSO.  The best way to get NRA certified is to call the NRA and ask for contact info for the folks in your area qualified to certify you in whatever disipline you want certification.  There are several different disiplines (pistol, rifle, shotgun, home defense, hunter safety) each one requires a course be completed.  Range safety Officer can be a hands on course or home based course with the home study materials available from the NRA.

Here is a link to a NRA trainers website you may find some info there but it is set up for trainers so you may be limited to what info you can access   http://www.nratraining.com/

Here is a link to the NRA Education and Training center you can find all the info you need about certification programs etc.  http://www.nrahq.org/education/index.asp

When I got certified in pistol and rifle disciplines it was a 3 day course (3 full 9-10 hour days) and I got the RSO cert via the home study course.  The courses will depend on who the coach or instructor is that is conducting your course some are shorter or longer and some are very disiplined where others just want to sit around and BS about guns.  If you have any trouble finding the info you need send me an email at buckchaser@verizon.net and I'll see if I can help.
