What scope do you prefer for your Thompson pistol?
« on: January 27, 2007, 10:27:23 AM »
I have not had much opportunity to look thru various pistol scopes.  I have had a Bushnell Elite in the past.  What scope do you like best for punching paper and hunting?

Depends on the caliber for me.  Most of my deer hunting is 100 yards or less so I use a 2x on any caliber used for that, I prefer Leupold or Weaver.  For the longer range calibers like 223 I use variable scopes and I prefer the T/C 2.5-7's for them.

I guess I have more T/C variables than anything else, but my favorite all around pistol scopes are Burris because they have a larger field of view.  I have trouble aquiring the target sometimes, and the fov helps like crazy for me.

I just put a Leupold 2.5x8 on a 12 inch 357 Max and I like it. I have one on my 14" 7-30 Waters also. I have Burris scopes as well, but I like the Leupold the best because it seem easier to acquire the target and see better in low light. I looked at the Bushnell holo sight yesterday and decide the scope would serve me better.

Are all the scopes you all have been listing able to hold up against recoil?  Most of the ones like simmons, bushnell, and several others have reviews that go on and on...."great scope but only held up to a few of my hunting handloads," etc.

I've used
2X Leupold's  No complaint, good scope
4X Leupold    No complaint, good scope
2-6 Bushnell Trophy  Fixed eye relief may work better for someone with longer arms
2-7X Burris's  One failed after 10 shots with a 44 Mag.  Sold off my other one.
2X Nikon's    My pick, bigger field of view and brighter than a 2X Leupold, I have two of these still in service.

I just purchased a bushnell in 2X6 power for my T/C Custom 7X30 Waters, and love it.  I have extra long arms and get good eye relief with it.  I also have a 2.5 X 30 NC Star on my .357 MAX.  It's a cheap scope, but I have shot over 250 rounds and never had to adjust from the original sighting in.  For the money, they arn't too bad.  so far so good.

Let me be so bold as to say all scope brands fail.
I will speak about two brands for the purpose of comparison
I have had a Leupold 4x LER's give up the ghost and I have had Burris variable (2.5-7LER old style) do the same.
I know of several Burris scopes that whooped every high dollar scope out there and then I have seen Burris burp easily.
Variables are more likley to fail under the most extreme recoil versus a fixed.

My 3-12 LER's have stood up to consistent recoil in a lightweight XP in cartridge larger than the 300WSM and average weight XP's in 284 Win and 6.5-284.
The clicks have been repeatable also.
Having good rings (no slippage) is sure important to scope life.
I love the Burris rings with the inserts

I think the Burris 2-7 is the best deal going now. I have several different LER scopes but have not owned the Burris 3-12. For hunting I like 2x or 2.5x power with a large objective lens, the variable give you this option. One other thing I have found is that you should purchase your scopes in matte black finnish because silver finnish on the inside of the tube reflects light where you don't want it.
P.S. I like Weaver bases with Weaver 4X4 medium rings. From 45-70 down the only optic I've had break was the ring/mount integral to a red-dot sight while shooting on a 14" 357 Herrett.

For deer hunting I like the TC pistol scopes.

For varmit and target in the .223, I use a rifle scope. It is a Bushnell 3-9X that claims 6" eye relief. It is actually about 4" at 9X but it still gives better field of view. I hold close to aquire the target and then back off a bit before I shoot. So far, no cuts on the forehead.

I agree with xphunter, all scopes fail sooner or later. I shook apart a Leo 4X twice on my 309JDJ. Leo replaced it the second time and I sold it. A Burris 3x9 failed on the same 309JDJ barrel. I like the Burris scopes the best except for the shrinking eye relief as you increase the magnification. I have probably have a dozen Burris, one Leo 2.5x8, one Weaver 2.5X8, and one B&L 3000 Elite 2x6. The B & L use to be on a 375JDJ and took a lot of pounding and  held up fine.

personally I like the Burris 2x7 so far with the 2.5x8 Leupold next and the 2x6 bushnell third. I want one of the 3x12 burris's but have not had the chance to look thru one. I have scopes from 2x ,3x and 4x from various makers Also a bunch of other variables of the "inexpensive" kind, You wouldn't put those on hard kickers.

:D I like hunter's pistol silhouette, so I use a 4-12 Leupold on most, we use rifle scopes for any sights category. I have a Burris 3-12 pistol scope for the 7mmTCU, and I love it dearly. Have only one weaver-nah. Leupold & Stevens or Burris, 100%!

My vote goes to the Leupold lines of handgun scopes.  So far the only scopes on any of my handguns that have not made it back to the factory yet.  ;)

I don't know if this qualify's but for my hunting pistols I use red dot scopes. Most of my shots are 100 yards or less mostly less. I have them on two 44's a 41 mag a 357 Max and a 7-30 Waters which I shoot a deer at about 130 +/- yards once. The nice thing about them is you don't have to worry about keeping it in focus when following a deer, wherever the dot is in the scope that's where your aiming. If your going for distance then one of the varibles are the ticket. Peter aka pistolfan

I have a Simmons pro-hunter 2-6X mounted on my Smith 629 44 mag. I also have a leupold 2.5-8X mounted on my T\C 7-30 Waters.  Now, the Leupold is a $450 scope. The Simmons is a $110 scope.

I pound full load 44 mag rounds thru my Smith and have done so for 3 years now. That Simmons hasn't flinched once. Holds it's zero and has excellent clairity. The Leupold....well, it's a Leupold. Best scope you can buy. But, for the price difference, if I were to buy another handgun scope, I would get a Simmons pro-hunter. That 6X vs 8X isn't enough of a difference on a handgun scope for the price.

I have an older 1.5x4 burris on a 3030 super 14, no compensator.  It has taken a real beating.  My very first handgun buck was a neck shot at 130 yards with the 3030, dropped immediately.  In my excitement (I was just in my 20s and new to deer hunting) I jumped out of the stand to peruse my quarry, and to my surprise, the deer lifted its head.  Scared me to death that I'd lose the deer.

I carefully climbed back up into the stand and set up to take another shot (Deer still not dead, but not going anywhere).  I lined up the shot, but my heart was beating so hard that the crosshairs jumped around like a baby rabbit.  I loosened my grip, which fixed the jumping, but it'd slipped my mind that I was shooting a 3030 with 150g bullets and 38 grains 748 out of a pistol.  Needless to say, the second shot was true, but the pistol jumped out of my hands, crashing onto the floor of the blind right on the ocular lens housing.  Wooden floor, so I was lucky that it didn't leave a mark, but I knew that the scope was history.

Cleaned the deer, and went out the following morning to check the scope.  Utterly amazing!!!! The violence didn't even knock it off zero.  I've had other scopes, but Burris has always been able to stand the recoil offered (no, I don't have any casulls or other such howitzer pistols) 3030 being the greatest.  I also have a 2 power TC Recoil Proof fixed power on a 209x50 that has taken everything that I have thrown at it.  It has stayed true, and it is even a lighted reticle scope.  Hope this helps.
