what barrel do I "need"
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:13:59 PM »
I'm getting 2 barrels. One is a 357 and I'm undesided on the other. I already have(not all handis but have them) 204, 223, 243,
30-30, 762x54, 30-06, 300wsm. So what do I "need"?

Ok sounds like it should be a 45-70 but a standard handi or a bc. I'd like a bc for the length and weight but are there any sights that dont cost $100?

45-70 is hands down one of the best there is.  As for barrel length--what are using it for?  The BC is not nearly as "handi" in brush and to carry, the longer barrel does give a different look and longer sight radius unless you are scoping.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

The Williams FP is $60 from H&R, but the WGRS that comes on the complete rifle($18 from them with an accessory barrel) is a serviceable sight, I've used one for years on several muzzzleloaders. I also have one on a 22" Handi .45-70.

Quick,
you reamed a bc to 45-110 right? Can that be loaded smokeless to full hop. I know it will give a real thump but what kind of energy could I get. I have no real need for this I just need a gun for my manhood.

You know how much power is needed to kill a jug of water. ;D ;D

45/70, then a .223, then a .280, then a shotgun barrel or 2, or 3, then a couple of rimfires, you NEED a .17 (both) as well a both .22's, LR and Mag, and of course a 7x57 if you can find one....<><.... :)

BCs are nice shooters and a great looking rifle but I think my 22" Handie .45-70 is fast becoming my goto gun, I don't think it'll top the .357s thou.

I think the best way to find the caliber you need is to get the accessory barrel order form and just check the box next to each one you dont have!!!!!  would be nice, but i think a 45 70 will be in my near future.

You cannot go wrong with Handi in 45/70, and since the question was what barrel do you need, the obvious answer is----------a 45/70, because we all know everyone NEEDS a Handi in 45/70!!!! A Buff Classic or a classic 22" Handi barrel, as long as it's in 45/70 you have it covered....<><.... ;D

Mine's a 45-120, it can be loaded to considerably more than the 45-70 with blackpowder, but with smokeless in a modern rifle, it can equal and exceed the 45-70 with considerably less pressure. Take a look at the pressure of 60gr of H4895 with a 500gr bullet in the Hodgdon data, take the pressure on up to levergun data at 40kpsi, and it's in the 458 win mag performance or better, but I have no reason to do that, really. There's no published data for it tho, so it would be just an experiment which I haven't persued. Ed Hubel gave me data that he feels would be very safe in a 45-120 BC, he's done a lot of work with his SB2 Slug gun frame in the 12 Ga from hell project. He's shot a 600gr bullet at 2100+fps IIRC, no problems. But, like I said, no reason to go there, other than for fun. :D

a friend of mine thinks he needs a 416 rigby for a "man gun". I'd like to pass him a handi and say try this. ;) Just wanted to know the potential.

btw can 45-70 still be shot through your 120 safely?

Thanks
