...on the GG and 444P out to the end of the barrel instead of giving them that "carbine" look? I never understood why they didn't. You'd have a more classic look and 1 or two extra rounds in the tube. Anyone ever seen one modified that way?

I like 'em just the way they are and I think it's a matter of "to each his own" preference. That said I'll admit that it is hard to argue with the logic behind one or two more rounds; especially with a rifle/carbine designed for self defense against big nasty critters with claws and teeth. I did check out a Marlin Ltd IV with the 18 inch barrel and full mag tube before I put my 1895GS in layaway. It handled very well and pointed just as quick as the GS. The only drawbacks were the price, $200.00 more than the GS, and the fact that it didn't come in stainless.

If your serious about one with a full length mag tube I'm sure you could find one on one of the Web Auctions or maybe through Davidson's.

Litefoot: When I had my Winchester Big Bore rebarreled to a 26" barrel by the Montana Rifleman, I also had them install a full length magazine tube. They are up on the net at Montanarifleman.com, and you can find out from them how much they would charge for that service on your Marlin. Hope this helps. Mikey.

I've seen them modified, and I 've done a couple also. It only takes a longer tube/spring, which can be purchased from Marlin, and a smith to cut a new a new dovetail into the bottom of the barrel.
Once the dovetail cut is made, the rest of the swap can be easily accomplished by anyone with minor skills. To give it a more finished look, a dovetail blank should be installed in the old location.

Thanks for the tip. I did call Marlin, and you have to buy the 26" Cowboy tube ($27) and cut it down to length. The longer spring is another $5 I think.
