Finally got  9oz jar of IMR Trailboss. Very bulky. Anybody use this stuff in .44mag/.45colt or .444marlin/45-70 type cartriges with hardcasts for reduced velocity ie; 1100-1200 fps?

Currently, my use of TrailBoss is limited to .500 Linebaugh loads.  I'll get into using it in the .38-40 and .45-70 before I'm through.

Been using it for awhile now, amazing stuff. Have gotten an extreme spread of 6 fps with it in 44 mag. Have used it with bullets as soft as 11 BHN. Gives consistent reduced velocity loads for the 45-70 Contender (14") too.
Works well in 30-30 too, but not so good in 7.62 x 39.

It is the only powder I will use in my shorty 6-1/2" 50-70 Contender.  A 90+ percent loading density load shoots at about 950 fps. with a 400 gr LBT LFN.  This powder burns exceptionally clean and consistant for me even in this short of a barrel, and really fills the case without producing high pressures.  I spoke with a ballistician, and he gave me the following formula, ( straight wall cases only).  Determine your bullet seating depth, mark a case at the bullet base, them fill the case with to that level with Trailboss.  Weigh this charge, and 70% of this weight will be you start load.  He only said to never compress this powder, as it drastically alters the burn rate.  I have only used this formula on .38 specials, .44 mags with 180 wadcutters, and the 50-70.  The 38's and .44's shoot as good as the .50.  My .44 T/C is a scoped 10" and will shoot in 1/2" at 50 yds. with Trailboss.  I think you will like it for low to midrange loads.  Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I just re-read my post, I got all the info right, just don't send a copy to any of my old English professors, they'll string me up.
