Carrying extra rounds for rimfire calibers
« on: January 25, 2007, 10:52:11 AM »
How do you folks carry extra rounds for .17 HMR and other rimfire cartridges?  I have belts for other centerfire calibers and cartridges but am having problems finding something suitable for rimfire.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If I am out hunting Small Game where I do not think I am going to be shooting a lot of ammo I use a couple MTM Ammo Wallets. Each one holds 30 rounds of  .17 Mach II, .17 HMR. .22 LR or .22 WMR Ammo. They are quite thin and slip easily in a pocket. The individual cartridges are held in place with molded in fingers to keep that ammo from rattling.

If I am out after Small Varmints in which I am going to be shooting lots of ammo, I put a few plastic 100 rounds .22 LR Ammo boxes in the thigh pockets of my BDU's.

I guess these methods of carrying Rimfire ammo has worked well for me so I have not searched for alternative methods.

They used to make a rimfire belt.  I had one when I was a kid around 1980.  My father got it for me, had to modify it as I was too small in the waist.  Held like 50 rounds.  That and a Stevens 22 Single Shot was a lot of fun walking around.  That was as good as anything.  It was canvas with a leather strip at the bottom as a stop.  I'm sure it was from a gun show, K-mart (they once sold guns, most of us remember), or the local gun dealer.

Later, I used to wear a jacket knocking about in the woods, and carried a box in the jacket pocket, but that was with a Ruger 10/22 and I had magazines for it also.  I tried belt pouches, but they seem to spill bullets if you sit down sometimes (at least the cheapies do).

In my pocket I carry a zippered coin pouch with the ammo in it.  For quick reloads, I put a wide rubber band around the forearm and stick a few cartridges under it.

+1 for SD Hangunner's suggestion of the MTM Ammo Wallet. They slip very nicely into a shirt pocket.

These are the clear ticket for use with my Contender.

The Ammo Wallets can be a little hard to find, you might end up having to order them from Midway or somewhere.

I have a zippered pouch that slips on my belt, carry 17 HMR in one of it's pockets and 22's in the other.

Uncle Mike's makes a pouch that will slide on to your belt.  It will easily hold a box of 50 rounds.  Makes for a faster reload than the MTM wallets.  I've seen them at Sportsman's Warehouse for $10 - $12.

I just slip 12 or so extra rounds in the watch / coin pocket of my jeans.

I use the round plastic containers that mints or the ground up beef jerky comes in.  They are similar in size to dip cans, but I don't dip and can't stand the smell of the stuff.  Federal Spitfires use to come in the orange containers and this is where it started.  Handy and my wife doesn't have to fuss about finidng rimfire ammo in the washing machine.
