« on: January 25, 2007, 04:55:54 AM »
A Japanese entertaiment TV show is looking for someone who has a Bowling Ball Cannon. We want someone who can shoot a Bowling Ball with his/her own cannon and aim at Bowling pins far away. We will visit your place and film your performance. It's Money involved. The filming shoud take place in the first half of February. If there's someone willing to do this, please contact JOSH by calling 1-800-983-7479, or email me at tsuyoshi@officekei.net, ASAP. Thank you.

It is always fun to be paid to shoot your cannon.

This will give new meaning to "rolling fire".  I have gotten a "strike" on a set of pins with a 2" ball, and some of the pins went quite a distance.  Apparently there are quite a few bowling ball mortars, but I haven't heard of a bowling ball cannon.

A bowling ball Cannon would be a sight.

Wes, if they will settle for your Mortar, I'll  have a place to shoot.  If I could get my daughter-law-to come, will even have a Japanese interperter.

I'm getting a mental image of that Japanese show where the guys are dressed like a cross between Iron Chef and Liberace...and involving cannons, bowling balls, mud pits and big giant rubber rollers to jump across!

...and I have to admit.....I'd watch it! ;D

OK guys, this opportunity is for real.  I have personally talked with Tsuyoshi Harada and as far as one can tell over the phone, this is a real deal.  However, it needs to be done by the middle of February which is impossible for me.  So if you can accomodate that schedule, send him an email and get with it.  You can PM me for further info if you're interested.

I'd love to do it too, but (aside from not yet having the right diameter tube) I KNOW the local bowling alley won't let me near it - those pin setting machines are expensive!   ;D

I talked to him last night. I don't think I want to do it? He wants to hit regular sized pins repeatably. Probably at 150 feet or so.  I've never shot this to hit anything before.

He wants to hit regular sized pins repeatably.

I told him that was going to require some experimentation and maybe some creative film editing, such as splicing at hit from 50 yards after a shot at 600 yards.  I also figured I would have to adjust my mortar bed into something more resembling a barbette carriage so I could fire more horizontally without the bed rolling over.

They really wanted to do this on too tight a schedule.

Five hundred yards at a set of bowling pins would be a tough shot for any smoothbore.

... and wants to shoot at 500 yards.

I told him we would have to start at short range and work outward to longer range.  I think they (the whole organization) have a distorted view of the real capabilities of this kind of thing.  Really, knocking down a bunch of pins at 500 yards with one shot would be a challenge with a match grade .300 Magnum.

Knock down a bunch of pins at 500 yds, let's see, just over 43,000 sq feet to the acre.  How many bowling pins to cover a acre,  oh I think we just may beable to pull this off.

Looks like 100 yrds or so would be better since you'd be able to see everything with one camera angle. Split screens are fine for closeups, but looking over a cloud of sparks and smoke and being able to see the pins flying apart downrange would be so much more cool.

I sent a link to this thread to Paul Stone. He was in a cannon shooting documentary with me and I met him at the premiere.  He demolished quite a few items with his bowling ball cannon. He even had a group of dancing girls, The Swabettes. Sorry, they were fully clothed.

I doubt if it will work out since Colorado is having the coldest and snowiest winter in a long time.
