Got a new Handi, but this is odd...
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:01:50 PM »
Just recently I made a trade with nomosendero for -his bros- new in box 7.62x39. I have been looking for one for some time and I am very happy with the trade 8) And got to put it out there, he is a great member to deal with too.
Anyway, got it in, signed for it, and took it home I unwraped my new toy. It is the regular hardwood model nothing fancy, but upon further examination I noticed that the forearm is a pallet wood Laminated forearm :-\ and totally didn't match the rest of the gun which actually had a decent grain buttstock, which I am thinking they are berch.

I called NEF and spoke to Jennifer and she said to send the old one back and they would replace it with a regular wood forearm.

Still I thought this weird. Anyone else run into this before?

I haven't, but it's not surprising, the factory could easily send one out mismatched, could also happen at a dealer with a couple rifles being inspected at the same time.  :-\

Well, it's not a big surprise but it did kinda put me off. Weird they fitted it to a 2005 receiver too. Guess they had an excess and it was an early production of the 7.62.

My 44 mag came the same way, but they are close in appearance, also the buttstock has a bit of birdseye too, and it shoots good so no way do I want to change anything.  I think that the laminated forend would be more stable also stronger.

It's SN is NV 239XXX.

My guess is that they were both assembled on the same day by the same person.......probably on the 5th of July or after some other long night of partying.

The fact that it is on a 05 frame does not suprise me any , there are a lot of older guns still on the shelves , the new 22-250 that i got for CHRISTmas was a 04 that was NIB .

They run a boat load of frames not just what they need for any one rifle run .

Good point. Like with any manufacture I suppose. I guess I will just send them back the old one and get one that matches. I will probably end up trading them off a little later and put my extra set of cinnamon lams on it anyway. Just thought it odd thats all  :)

myarmor,  Just curious, why the 7.62x39?  I hear there has been a lot of frustration with NEF's barrels in this caliber.

When looking I have seen the standard rifles with laminated stocks, darker finish unlike the Ultra.  In some ways a laminated stock makes sense because of the quality of wood available now.  It may be easier and just as cheap the make "plywood" instead of looking for decent grain and few flaws.

Only with milsurp, those that shoot sporting or handloads like them. It's been discontinued by the factory since most  want to shoot milsurp even after H&R warns against it!

Yeap what Tim said.....and just for the fun of it 8)
I get hosed for it sometimes ;D, but I have always liked the little Russian, and believe there is potiential for the little round if handloaded correctly. My main reason is to handload it, but I will admit, that when I got the rifle I had a couple 7.62 rounds left over from my SKS escapades, and fired a couple off just to go bang and before I go through the riggors of cleaning and polishing :P
I have a few things I want to try, but right now I am in the process of gathering info/feedback and supplies.

I have seen the ugly lams on NEF's on the used rack, but haven't seen them on any new production Handis. Thats not to say, I suppose, that it's beyond them, right now who's to say ??? Some strange calls being made at camp, thats for sure.

I have owned three NE products and my experience has been as follows.

1) H&R 25-06 was an amazing rifle for the money.  Consistently shot MOA and less groups.

2) NE Handi-Rifle in 243 with bull barell.  Shot well, but constantly stuck cases and occassionally ejected hot brass into my face when fired.  I sent the rifle in for service and the stuck case problem was corrected but the lock up problem persisted.

3) NE Handi-Rifle in 223.  Received as a gift, so I did not have a chance to inspect the gun at the time of purchase.  Upon inspecting it, I realized that not only was the forearm stained a different color than the stock, but it also had tool marks on it where the sling stud was installed.  I called the factory and they agreed to send a new forearm.  I received the new forearm which also didn't match the stock.  In addition to these issues, the gun which I have had for a year, has yet to group well.  I handload, so I have had the opportunity to develop and shoot several different loads.

Just my two scents worth.

I saw a laminated forearm on a sb-1 at wal-mart the other day. It wasn't checkered like on the rifles. Looked kinda odd.

NEF Handis don't have checkering, just H&R Ultras, that's one of the differences, Ultras also have resin laminated stocks, Handi stocks that are laminated are plain wood, commonly referred to as "pallet" wood.

Hello grde, I am a bit lost on this complaint about one of your 2nd of 3 H&R's:

"2) NE Handi-Rifle in 243 with bull barell.  Shot well, but constantly stuck cases andoccassionally         ejected hot brass into my face when fired.  I sent the rifle in for service and the stuck case problem was corrected but the lock up problem persisted."

what lock up problem are you speaking of? There are those here with information that could help you with that. It might be as simple as oil on the locking shelf....<><.... ;)I

I've yet to see a NEF stock I liked other than the black plastic set.

Got a .410 with painted black wood that had never been fired and the paint was peeling already.

Wonder what the wood looks like under the paint.  Might be nicer to strip it and start over.

I just can't begin to like the boat paddle shape of them mostly.  To each his own, but,
to me, that's UGLY as hell.

Shaner has some decent looking colors and finish, but, still have that boat paddle shape to them.

Anyone agree with me, or not??

You like 'em, go for it is all I can say.

Not really, I like em, the only stock that I truly dislike is the standard Encore stock and even more so, its clone, the CVA Optima Elite.
