410 BRASS in 45 Colt
« on: January 21, 2007, 12:37:33 PM »
I would like to get some longer brass for my 45/410 contender, I see that 410 brass is available and the dimensions are very close. Having said that I was wondering about the wall thickness and would it be safe if I were to make a 45 colt round out of them ?  What got me going on this is the lenggth of the free bore in this thing.  After making a chamber cast I see that it is quite long as you would expect it to be for the long 410s.
If anyone can shed some light I would appreciate it.  Ron

I wouldn't use the brass .410 case for anything other than .410 shotshells...other have tried to fill the gap with a cartridge known as the .45 Mongo which is made by necking up a .444 Marlin to accept .45 bullets..be careful of that one..heard bad stories...a gentleman on this forum has developed a round using 9.3 x 74 Rimmed brass..he fireforms the brass after necking up to .45, but uses mild to moderate .45 long colt data with a filler of poly fillers to hold the powder down on the primer.  You might want to search for it, but I forgot what he named the thing..

Atcron, Have you tried 45's in your barrel?   Mine does quite well with Federal factory loads.

I have and have some pretty good sucess with a varity of different loads.  I just thought since there is so darn much free bore that getting the bullet closer to the lands would really tighten up the groups. Maybe I should be happy whit what it's doing now and let it go.
Thanks for your input.  Ron

Mine always did the best with the heavy loads..300 grain hard cast and 300 grain XTP's..I could hit 2-liter plastic drink bottles at 45 yards with mine.
