What cartrige for a Arisaka rebarrel project?
« on: January 20, 2007, 03:26:49 AM »

I've set myself on having my Arisaka rebarreled, Even though it shoots great with the 7.7x58 chambering. With it's grossly oversized bore .316 in the grooves my bullet selection is very limited.

The problem is I cannot decide what new chambering to go with. So why don't you guys throw out some suggestions. I've concidered 35 REM, but without much body taper rounds will not feed from the mag. I,ve also kicked around the notion of a 22-250 with a long sporter 1;9 barrel, the great thing about this is 22-250 rounds feed flawlessly.

The only restriction is the new chambering must use  pretty close to the same case head size

Although I'm not a quarter bore fan 257 Roberts is on the table. I would go with the STD version as the blown out case of the IMP version wouldn't feed very well. Of course if I went that route 250 Savage would be sweet as well.

I doubt you'll find a smith willin' to take on the job. The Arisaka has the same breaching as the Mauser, but it's all machined into the barrel instead of being part of the receiver.  :-\

The Arisaka is the strong action ,maybe strongest, your choices are only hendered by length and not strength, it can house standard length cartridges, (30-06) class ,I know a guy that can re-bore for you for $140-$160 ,a 35 Whelen would be nice.

Let me know if you need info. re-boreing would save you money..
