« on: January 19, 2007, 01:11:16 PM »
I want to get a S&W 4" 686. But don`t know if I want a 6 shot or a 7 shot?  Is the 7 shot a good pistol? has anyone heard of anything bad about the 7 shots? are the cyl`s strong? whats your opinion?

Im after a 4" 686 also. Im gonna go with the 6 shot version for the sake of having a REAL 6-shooter. If i needed more ammo Id get a semi-auto.  Id hate to meet a bad guy that needs more then 6 shots of hot 357 to stop.  Also, I question the strength of the 7 shot cylinder even though im sure its just as strong, but I like having more metal in those important areas.

My brother has a 686+, and we're currently watching the top of the forcing cone, which has noticeable erosion. Sometimes I suspect it's because of the trade-off of shoe-horning one more chamber in the cylinder, but that is just conjecture on my part. I would appreciate if other owners of the 686+ would let me know if this is common.

Aside from that, it's a nice shooter, and acceptably accurate. I have an old 686-3 with which to compare. The 686+ has a much nicer finish, especially on the cylinder face where it is polished, making it easier to clean. If you are buying new, I would expect both newer models to be built the same way, however. I have not actually compared the measurements between the cylinders, but the 686+ looks like it has a slightly larger cylinder.

They are well-balanced, easy pointing guns. Mine has a 4" barrel, which I feel is about perfect. Both of them have nice, smooth actions, too. You really can't go wrong with a 686, unless you happen to buy a rare lemon.

Personally, I'm perfectly happy with six shots. High-velocity 125 gr. JHP .357 loads reportedly account for the best percentage of one-shot stops. If your bad guy isn't stopped by two of those, then you should have brought a rifle, or ran like hell.

edit: spelling

the 125's are causing your forcing cone promblem and they will start to leave a cut mark in the top strap.

My 686+ came to me almost by accident.  If the used Smith at the gun store that day had been a six shooter I would be just as happy with that.  As it stands I am very happy with my 4" plus.  It's hefty without being nose heavy and points like a dream.  I've fired all kinds of high ower ammo through it and it has never given me a second of trouble.

I'd buy the 7-shot in a heart beat. I have a 5-shot 638, and a 5-shot SP101. It ain't gotta be a six-shooter-just a good shooter. If one less is OK, so is one more!
