Thoughts on used barrels?
« on: January 16, 2007, 05:12:17 PM »
Mad....I found out today that my gun has not even been ordered..after placing the order a week or so ago...all because they can't track down a barrel.......So, after some anger over the phone....they're ordering a frame for me, so I'm going to look around for a barrel.

There are a ton of them on ebay, a lot of them are used....Just wondering what kind of sucess people are having with used barrels...and/or is it contraindicated?

I had made up my mind to pick up the .460 S&W..but hell, now I dunno...I plan on doing a lot of plinking..more plinking and target punching than hunting.  I'd do mostly whitetail/piggy hunting.

.45 colts in a 460s&w barrel would be good for plinking.  i bought a barrel off ebay that there's nothing wrong with.   just buy more than one barrel if you can't decide.

That's kind of what I'm thinking..if I order my own barrels I could almost get two for the price the freaking place I was ordering from was going to charge me......

Thanks for the advice on the 460..I think I'm still going to stay with that unless I can get convinced otherwise..just really upset because my dad ordered a prohunter frame and it's already here..wish I had done the same just wanted to get it taken care of all at once......

a lot of barrels go for $170-$180 on ebay.  i've been thinking about selling my 15" 30-06 and buying a .243.  i could probably get it all done before it's warm enough to shoot again (it's 3 degrees here) and only loose $20-$30.

Man..I don't know what I'd do in your situation..I can't stand the cold..the average temp here is >75.  In the summers it's around 100ish..and winters are warm..this Christmas I got to wear shorts and a t-shirt, and I was still sweating.

Right now it's "freezing," meaning it's around 40ish..this morning I saw they closed down about 1/2 the schools in the area and encouraged people to stay indoors and avoid leisure driving, lol.

I would skip e-bay myself. Look in the T/C classified adds here on Graybeard, there is always barrels for sale. As far as the 460 goes, it is a great round, I like it a lot.  ;D

I would stay away from used barrels on ebay myself. Look at it like this if the guy selling the barrel takes great care of it and is a nut like most of us he will be ablle to sell a good barrel on this site or another to people he has spoken too. You figure that a regular will give you all the details and warn you of issues. I have purchased several used barrels from forum associates and never had any trouble. Some really good deals too.

I have 12 barrels between my Encore and Contender....all were purchased used.  Five were from folks here on GBO, the rest were from E-bay.  If you don't find what you are looking for in the classifieds here at GBO, out a "want add" in.  You will have MORE than a couple of replies.  Sometimes you will run into folks who don't understand that a used barrel should not cost more than a new one, but other times you'll catch folks that just want to unload a barrel so they can pick up the "latest trend".

I think the only barrels I would be more cautious of would be the 22-250 (hard on the barrel) and the muzzle loader (if they didn't clean it, it could be pitted).  There are a couple of dealers on E-bay that are really honest in describing the condition of thier barrels.  Most of these guys have 100+ trades in thier history.

On used barrels, you should expect things like "marks where the barrel mounts" aka "marks from the receiver" or "sights removed"....usually the sights have been replaced by scope mounts which usually come with the package.  Sometimes, you can also find barrels with the fore-end as part of the package.  In my opinion, you should NEVER have to pay over $200 for a barrel, unless it is stainless and/or with a muzzle brake.

SIDE NOTE... You might want to ask folks on here with experience with the 460 single shot.  I know they discourage using 45 Colt in 460 revolvers because the bullet has to jump so for to hit the rifling/loading cone.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Right now I own 7 barrels for my Contenders and Encores.  All of them were bought used on Ebay except for two.  Their condition was excellent and they'll outshoot me any day.  I do pay special attention to the pictures and ask for more if I'm not satisfied with what they show.  I also look at their feedback.  Ebay is definitely a buyer beware situation, but offers very good barrels at a decent price.  GBO has some great people and I purchased one of my frames here - very happy.  When I decide what caliber I'll pick up next I plan to start here, but have no reservations about trying Ebay too.  Unless you're looking for something completely out of the ordinary; just go with a used barrel.

I recently bought a 7-30 Waters barrel on ebay.  It came with a Leupold base and Leupold rings.  New price would have been ~ $230 for the barrel and $40 for the rings and bases.  I bought it for $187, so I saved $53 over the new price.  The front site had been removed and the threads were slightly damaged, but a local gunsmith chased the threads with a tap and only charged $10.  Otherwise, the barrel looked like new.  When buying on ebay, check the seller's rating.  It should be 98% or higher, in my opinion.  Saving money is the main reason to use ebay, but in my case, the 7-30 Waters barrels were backordered and still are, so I couldn't buy a new one.  Like others have said, I would buy on ebay again.

Used barrels do not bother me a bit, I actually prefer them to new unless I cannot find one priced enough less than new to justify the used.

I try to stay away from E-bay for buying.  Of the 3 I have bought off E-bay 2 had problems.  They were minor with the dovetail falling out of one when I went to put the forearm on and the wrong size sights being on another (which could happen with a barrel you buy in person.  There are good ones on E-bay too, I have sold about 10 myself and I know they were good.

I have bought one from a member here and it worked out well.

A lot of times I pick up used barrels at gunshops that might have one laying around and they seem to have trouble moving in this area.  Seems like gun shows are always way over priced.

But my favorite way to get used barrels is by finding a shop or individual that has a frame and some barrels they want to sell as a package.  This are sometimes priced way to cheap.  I once bought a frame and 5 barrels for $500.  The last one I picked up was a frame, 3 barrels and a scope for $460 which was not as good as the first one but still not bad.

If you buy a new barrel and decide you do not like it in a year or two, you will lose money when you sell it.  Buy a used barrel and decide the same thing you will probably break even in the worst case.

I too have bought used barrels for my contender and Dan Wesson on Ebay and as the others said"check their feedback and return policy".  All of mine were excellent and some even unfired; at about half the price of new.  I'm relatively new to this site and haven't found anything I could use yet, but I check all available sites when looking for a gun part.

I have just gotten back in to Encores and have bought a Bullberry pistol barrel off ebay, a MGM rifle barrel off here, a Bullberry rifle barrel off specialtypistols and another Bullberry pistol barrel from Bullberry that was in stock. You can find great deals on used barrels that are better quality than the factory tubes. Not that there is anything wrong with the T/C made barrels but you can get different chamberings and guaranteed accuracy from Bullberry and MGM.

I just got a scope from Ed's Contenders and he is a great guy to deal with and has some good prices on T/C custom shop barrels also.

I buy and trade barrels all the time and have gotten some that are not all that others have have been great.

I bought my 454 off ebay and the ad stated it was new when I got it it was not new and I had to fight the seller to get some of my money back.
my 26" 209x45 was bought as a package deal and it has some pitting in the barrel at the breach not real bad you have to look for it to see it it shoots good enough for a M.L.
several other barrels I have had some custom work done to them, I got a 308 that looks like it was cut back in a home work shop and the crown was very bad. I sent it off to OTT and he made it right for me, for the money I spent on the barrel and the work to correct the bad work I could have bought a brand new barrel but now it shoots good.

Watch what you are doing and remember you are getting a used barrel, try and find out Way the person is trying to get rid of the barrel, A lot of people just want to get something new by moving a barrel that is not shot much then you have others that are trying to off load a bad barrel and don't care who they hurt

I would not hesitate to buy a used T/C barrel and have done so many times.  When our local Metallic Silhouette game died out I sold several of my extra barrels on e-bay and all of the buyers seemed happy.  I think the main thing when buying used on e-bay to to check the sellers feedback.  If they have had a ton of transactions and still have nearly 100% positive feedback you have nothing to worry about.  Personally I like buying used Contender barrels.

I too buy used...in fact I've NEVER purchased a new Contender barrel (I have 14 at this time).

I think everyone here has provided lots of examples of what to look for when purchasing
used barrel.  It's no real trick.

I've bought most of my used barrels off dealers who "had" to take them in on a trade or
a deal and were "stuck" with them.  It's not a quick way to buy barrels, but if you sniff around local gun shops, you
may just get lucky!  I rarely pay over $100-140 for a barrel...usually $100.00. (if the dealer is NOT a T/C kinda shop)

I think Ebay can work for you if you decide how high you will go before hand and stick to that number.  I agree,
watch for the feedback scores.

I've really done pretty good selling unwanted barrels on Ebay!  Be carefull, bidding can get too exciting and you
can over bid real easy...many do!

Good luck!

I'd stay away from Eds TC's if your looking for a used barrel. He misrepresents his used barrels from my experiences with him. You never know what to expect.

I totally disagree.  I have never been unhappy with a used barrel from Ed, or anything else for that matter.

I will have to stand up for ED as well he has always treated me good and the barrels I bout from him was just as described.

The thing with him is you have to know what to ask and how to talk to him. He will tell you just the information you ask for. the only other thing I can say is he is hard to get a hold of but when you do it is well worth the time.

rickyp, I totally agree with you on having to know how to talk to him and ask as many questions as possible. I leaned this many years ago when dealing with him.  I have dealt with Ed quiet a few times in the past and had always been happy with what I got but recently I tried to buy two different used barrel from him and I asked very specific questions on each barrel and I had to return both of them to him. The first was a used 35 rem barrel that I was very specific on the condition of the bore. I told him that I was a cast bullet shooter and needed a bore that was in excellent condition with no rust or pitting. Ed assured me that the bore was perfect. When I got the barrel, it had a badly pitted area just ahead of the chamber. The story with the second barrel is, I was wanting a 357 max barrel but I was looking for a 357 mag barrel to have rechambered to the max to get rid of the long forcing cone type chamber in the factory barrels. I explained this to Ed and he knew exactly why I wanted to go about it this way he didn't have any used 357 mag barrel at the time. A few weeks later, he advertized as having a used 10 inch blued 357 max barrel that had been rechambered to the max. I talked to him about it several times on the phone asking as many questions as I could think of. Ed even mentioned that "you know this is the best way to have a 357 max barrel" again the reason was due to the throat in the chamber being ideal for accuracy since it would no longer have the long forcing cone type chamber. I bought the barrel and when it arrived. The first thing I noticed was that the barrel did not to have ever been stamped with 357 mag. It was stamped 357 max but it was not the best looking stamp job I have seen although, you cold clearly see that it had always been 357 max. The mag was not stamped over. The next thing I did was check  out the throat. Turns out, it was a factory chambered 357 max barrel with the long cone shaped free bore area just like every other factory chambered 357 mag or max that I've ever seen.  When I called Ed to let him know about this, he played stupid on the phone and acted like he had no idea of what the factory chambers looked like when he had already talked to me weeks earlier about the same thing and he knew all about the chambers at that time. I sent the barrel back and two weeks after he received the barrel back, he sent me a refund. I was still out around $24 bucks on the whole deal because of having to ship the two barrels back to him and still didn't have a barrel.

Trust me, I was just as confused as you may be in trying to believe this whole story, based off my experiences with him in the past. I had bought 4 other barrels from him prior to these, two of which were used barrels and they were just as he described. I don't know what the hell he was thinking or why he misrepresented these two barrels to me but I will never deal with him again. He also tells everyone that there is a no questions asked return policy but he clearly gets mad and hard to work with when you actually have to send a barrel back to him. He did refund my money but I the whole deal was just aggrevating and it cost me $24 bucks to lean a leason.

I posted this story on here a while back as was called names and was told I was a liar and couldn't be trusted by Graybeard and he accused me of just wanting to bitch about and bash his sponsors for some reason. After he called me childish names and showed how much of a ass he could be, he locked the post so I couldn't respond and then after a day or so he deleted it so knowone else could read it. I don't have any reason to bash his sponsors. I was just trying to warn people of what might happen if they buy a used barrel from Ed. After this happened, I received several PM's from people saying that they have had similiar experiences with Ed. There are also many people that want visit GBO anymore due to Graybeard being an jerk. As long as you agree with him, everything is fine but as soon as you don't agree with Graybeard on something, he starts the name calling.

I've always been impressed with buying NEW barrels from Ed, sorting used barrels from gun shows teaches you the real value of being able to find the brand new manufacturers version. When it comes to used, its 50-50 that you get one with enough rifling to shoot anyway. Half the used barrels I've bought weren't worth carrying home, the other half-I'm shooting with now! Its not the vendor, its the nature of the return on this stuff.
