Best Cold Blue for Touch-Ups on NEFs?
« on: January 16, 2007, 01:19:22 PM »
My wife put a couple of small scratches on her .30-30 barrel while getting out of a tripod stand this weekend.  I broke out the Birchwood & Casey Super Blue and you can now only see the spots if you're looking hard for them in good light.

"Great", I thought, "I'll just touch up that small scratch I put on the .45-70's receiver when I was trying to punch those friggin' pins out"... Not so good on the receiver.  Used the same steps right on the bottle that I'd used on that barrel, and now I have a shiny blue spot about half the size of a dime, where before I had just a small scratch.  So, after the end of the season on Jan 31, I'm sending it in to NEF and paying them the 30 bucks.

So obviously, the Super Blue doesn't do as well on the more polished receiver, but appears to have done a great job on the barrel.

I also have the B&C Pen, the paste blue, and some other (Outers, I think), but didn't even reach for them as I don't like the results I've gotten from them.

Cold bluing is not all that great to begin with, but since I own 4 NEFs now I probably will need to touch up a spot on a receiver now and then.  What's best?

 Thanks,

 Rick

If ya find something, let me know, I've had excellent results bluing an entire barrel from in-the-white with Perma Blue,  but touching  up a frame has been not so good using any of BC's products. :-\

On my hammer where I ground it down a whisker because of the scope & also on the bottom of my receiver where they fit the forearm from the factory I just used BC Perma Blue.  I have no complaints.

I don't know if it's still available but I've had great results with Brownell's Oxpho-Blue.

Brownell's and Cabela's have Oxpho-Blue. Just received a new bottle from Cabela's yesterday due to some clumsiness with my last bottle. This is good stuff.

The stuff I have,, have had it for more than 12 years and it still works great. It's a clear liquid that you can "dob" on with a Q tip or do a complete gun with proper preparation and technique.
