Got my boy an H&R Ultra last spring to take on our bear hunt last fall. We had an issue with the barrel all summer. Factory loads were sticking. Sometimes we could go 10-12 shots no problem, then maybe 3 out of 6 would stick. I polished the chamber, and even had my smith ream the chamber. He said their was a dip in the back of the chamber at 6 o'clock, about 3/16" in. Well, it was too close to the trip, so we took it, and he carried a rod to knock out the empty in case it stuck. We had no issues, and he got his bear, with 1 shot at 200 yds.
Well, we are now planning a trip to RSA in the summer of 08, for plains game. At first I was all for just selling the rifle, and getting him something different. Then we talked, and I said maybe we could get a new barrel, under warranty. My question is will they honor a new barrel, since I had my smith try to ream the chamber? There was no time to deal with customer service, when we did this, because it was too close to the hunt. Also, in the week my son carried the rifle, the blueing on the receiver rubbed off, where it was hitting the side with his sling. I'm not too hot on the blue job, because their are some shiny spots on the barrel where it rubbed off also. Now this was on an Ultra, not a handi rifle. Wonder if I send barrel and receiver back if I could get them to exchange it for a stainless receiver and barrel? The rifle is a .30-06. Any input appreciated.
