I use CLP as a general lube and preservative, not as a cleaner.  After cleaning I put a light coat in the bore and over the metal.

Breakfree CLP is an excellent rust preventative and protectant!

Also my #1 all-around gun oil and what I wipe my stuff down with after cleaning.  Tried many - this is the one I stick with.

FWIW, the USMC was using Break Free on their howitzer's back when I was in that line of work in the early 80's.  Still works on my own guns nowadays too.

USMC, US Army, and USAF have used it to clean bores and lube firearms for several years. I don't know about the USN.

I started using Break Free when I was an officer candidate in the mid 1980's.  I use as a general lubricant in the shop and a pre-cleaner to soften the fouling before I use solvent - makes things easier.  I'll also use the version known as Lubricant/Preservative on my actions, it seems to work smoother than CLP does.  I will coat the bores with either CLP or Gunslick Ultra Lube.  The spray can version works great on semi-auto shotguns.

For grins, over the summer I ran a test of different gun oils that I had on hand.  Seeing which one would prevent a screw head from rusting longest in a humid environment (Arizona in the late summer rains).  Break Free one out over Outers, Gunslick Ultra Lube synthetic (a really close second), Butch's Bore Shine, WD-40, and Hoppes Bench Rest.

About a year ago, I put a speed lock spring in a rifle and it greatly increased the effort necessary to lift the bolt after firing. I read somewhere that CLP bonds with metal so as an experiment, I put a light coating of CLP on the locking lugs, let the bolt sit overnight, then wiped the bolt lugs clean with a clean cotton cloth. Bolt lift was immediately reduced back to about where it was before the speed lock. Bolt lift is still the same as it was right after the CLP application.

I use it in all my guns, I run a patch with it in my barrel after I clean it. I also rub a cloth with break free on the outer surface of the gun. I have been doing it for years.

I have never used CLP but I am interested in giving it a try. Is it okay on wood stocks? I went to my local gunshop this morning but they didn't have it and never have had it. Where else could I buy it locally w/o an internet order?

I use a cloth that has absorbed the CLP, but not soaking, and I wipe my wood stocks lightly with it and have not had any problems. I really don't use it to treat the stocks, just a very light wiping.   Like Redhawk, I put some in the bore with a damp patch after cleaning.  Some of my guns have been stored and unused for years (sorrowfully), and the bores remain perfect.  Other than gun shops and mail order, I would check the sporting goods dept. at Wal Mart, or a Gander Mtn, Bass Pro, Cabela's, etc.  I have a gallon of it that I use to refill my oiling bottles - a lot cheaper over the long term'  When I get a new gun, I rub the metal down pretty vigorously with it on a damp cloth - removes the bluing residues and seems to get into the metal.  The gun looks better after that, and it is really protected.  I have had a lot of blued rifles and shotguns in rain and snow, brought them into a warm cabin from sub-zero weather, and generally used them in conditions which promote rust.  Never had a bit of rust when I used CLP.  I learned the hard way, duck hunting in the snow with a new Browning Auto-5 about 40 years ago - before I discovered CLP. BJM, I've seen it in the automotive lubricants section in numerous places, much more so than in sporting goods. ;)

I found some Break Free this afternoon at Walmart. I appreciate the info and will start on some firearms tomorrow with it. It is kind of cool to learn about a good product from the GBO family. Thanks....

I've been useing Breakfree for many many years. (more than 25)  It's a great lube and general cleaner...  The military buys and uses it by the drum full....

I haven't used it on my dies because i figure the case lube is doing the trick there....  I don't have trouble with rust on the outside of the dies, so i haven't put anything there either...  And yes, i see it at Walmart, i wish they carried the giant size cans though, as it's cheaper to buy it that way

I have heard it said that one should not use teflon containing products on a bore.  Supposedly it "erodes" accuracy.  Have never found anything to back up this claim.  Anybody have any experience?

Break Free contains teflon.

I've used break free for years and it seems to work as well as any oil, I don't use it for cleaning.  The only problem I have with it is that it gets gummy if left on a gun too long.  Not a problem on the guns I use all the time but the ones I get out once or twice a year to clean and oil often need scrubbed with alcohol or acetone where the break free has settled.  I also hear break free changed its formula several years back, because of carcinogens in the old stuff.  I'm still using the old stuff because I had several quarts of it.

I am not quite sure what to think of the "teflon" comment on eroding accuracy. Has someone done a study on this or an article I can read? I have never heard of this before.

I also picked up a can of Break Free Powder Blast when I went to Wally World. Does anyone have any experience with this product?

I like what I see of the Break Free CLP so far. I also used it to clean my cookie sheet pan that I spray my brass on when I am using One Shot case lubricant to full length size. The build-up of One Shot was from about 2 years worth of use after someone told me they were using an old pan for this. The CLP cleaned it up in short order and I am sure the next clean up will be easier.

Breakfree is great stuff.  I've read (Ed Harris) that its good for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo too.  I use it for everything.

I sprayed down my snow shovel with it.  (They say to use the cooking stuff PAM) Anyway, I think it helps the snow to slide off the shovel better too.

The only reason I bring it up here is that I have been using my snow shovel a lot more than my guns lately! ;D ;D

Some of the benchrest guys use a little break free on their barrel threads, even a thin wipe on the bbl shoulder.  Those bbls aren't on very tight and are changed with light vises, so it just prevents any sticking or galling.

HOWDY !       IF  YOU WANT TO FIND SOMEONE WHO USES CPL BF TRY THE LOCAL RESERVE OR
GUARD UNIT . I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY BRANCH USE ANY THING ELSE . ( RETIRED USN , WORKED WITH MC AND NOW ARMY) . SINCE I AM A PISTOL TOTER ONE OF MY FIRST PERSONAL TRYS WAS A RUGER BK DUAL 45 . ALL THE CLEANING GEAR WAS OUT AND THEN THE BOYS HAD TO DO SOMETHING ELSE FIRST. I REMOVED MY HOG LEG FROM POV AND HOSED IT OFF WITH A SPRAY BOTTLE . CARFULLY COVERED WITH MY RAG AND PUT IT BACK UNDER SEAT , NO ONE WISER. EVEN THEN I COULD FORGET STUFF.    AT HOME A WEEK LATER I REMEMBERED AND RETREAVED SAME . RAN A WIRE BRUSH DOWN BARREL AND ALL THE LEAD AND COPPER WASHINGS FELL OUT IN MY HAND.       IF ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ALL THE MILITARY UNITS THEN ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME !!!
