338 winmag

Does anyone here shoot a 338 winmag,and if so how is it's performance at long range deer.

I don't have one but it's considered one of the best long range ELK calibers ever, Unless bigger game is on the menu, why not go with a 300 WM or 300 WSM?

I would think it might be good to 4,5,or 600 yds with the 200gr bullet. Myself I own the 338 RUM and have shot it to 400yds with a little holdover shooting 250gr bullets.

Sorry about that. I didn't know that they made a 338 Win Mag barrel for the Encore. If they do how long is it?

I don't mean to sound like a smart aleck Redhawk1, but I have killed an antelope at 380 yards with a contender handgun. Just because it is a handgun doesn't mean it is not accurate at long range, there are some people that cleanly kill big game at longer ranges with a single shot handgun.

I never stated that it could not be done, but you are the exception to the rule then. Most,  and understand when I say most handgun hunters won't put in the time to become that good with a handgun much less a rifle for the matter..  In my opinion a shot at 380 yards with a handgun is not an everyday shot. Exactly what caliber are you using in that Contender that has enough energy at that range to kill any animal humanly?

Also he was talking 400 to 600 yards. I don't think there are that many handgun shooters doing that with an Encore much less a Contender.

Changing the thread a little, I shoot a 15" Encore in 338.  I purchased the barrel from xphunter,
who really tested it's long range accuracy.  I have killed quite a bit of game from antelope to moose,
including some elk-sized African game.  I've hunted elk with it, but have not yet been successful.

I shoot 210 Noslers, which have given me very good performance save for some extremely close
shots (under 30 yards) on heavy bones in Africa.  I focus on field conditions, with Creedmore by
far my most accurate (unless I use a bipod).  On good days for me this Bulbery barrel is sub 1" in
the Creedmore.

Muzzle velocity is about 2500, close to a 11% reduction from Federal's published velocities using
a 24" barrel.  As I see it the ballistics are close to a 338-06.  This barrel is my primary handgun
hunting barrel, and does have Bulberry's muzzle brake.

Glad you are still enjoying the barrel.
As you know I wanted 1/2 inch or better @ 100 yards and second I was trying to run that cartridge like I would in a bolt rig.
With elk in mind, the set-up you described w/a 250 yard zero @ 7,000 feet elev. you drop:
-5" @  300 yds
-8" @  325
-12 @  350
-17" @ 375 yards

You are 4.0 to 4.4 inches high from 100-175 yards

I am fairly used to shooting long range with 7tcu (even though it's 200 yards) with IHMSA.Just need to practice at the longer ranges once I get my encore put together.Killed deer last year at 200 yrds.with 444 marlin in 10" contender.Would like to here more about the 338 win mag in encore.Have not bought bbl. yet waiting for the money?

Not exactly of the ranges you want for deer.
If I were to build a 338 again in a Encore (don't have Encore at the moment) I would go either with a 338-06 or 338-06 Imp.  The improved version will give you basically the performance of the 338WM without the risk over-flexing the frame (smaller head than the 338WM case).
If you are primarily converned with deer I don't personally see the need to have that size caliber, although there is surely nothing wrong with it.
A 280 Rem or 280 AI will give you a flatter trajectory/less wind deflection for LR than a 338WM will.

A 280 will push a 140 NBT 2700 (possibly add 50 fps) for sure or a 162 A-Max @ 2500 (possibly add 50 fps).

Assuming 15" barrel
A 280 w/140 NBT (0 elev) @ 2700 fps has a 12.5 wind drift (10mph) @ 400 yards
A 280 w/162 AMax (0 elev) @ 2500 fps has a 10.5 wind drift (10mph) @ 400 yards
338WM w/200 NBT (0 elev)@ 2550 fps has a 16.8 wind drift (10mph) @ 400 yards

At LR wind becomes the biggest issue.  The 162 AMAX is a proven deer getter in 7mm

We have BIG black bears here in NC up to 500 to 600 pounds (one was killed in I believe Beaufort county 812 lbs. around hog farm)This year on was killed on my club 475 lbs.So it will be a dual purpose handgun.Bear and deer can be shot from 20 feet to hundreds of yards on club.
