Should I 'cut' BC?
« on: January 11, 2007, 09:02:32 AM »
Ok, here's the situation.  I love my Buffalo Classic 45/70!  It is beautiful and very accurate with a great trigger.  BUT I want a gun that is handier to use in the blind.  It is also just a little 'long' stocked for me, especially with thick hunting clothes on.  I could sell the BC and buy a regular Handi in 45/70.  But some of the things I am reading have me worried if I will get as nice a gun as I have.  I love the wood on this gun.  So I am in a quandry here.  Sell it and chance a new one.  Or cut the barrel to 24" or 26" (and scope it), then shorten the butt and install a regular butt pad.  What do you think?  44 Man

It isn't rare or collectable so in my opinion make it like you want it. If you don't like it, more wood and another barrel is available to put it back.  This bunch here will buy anything left over like hogs feeding at a trough.

I would probably just buy a standard Handi in 45-70.

I cut my B.C. down to 26" this week. My friend will recrown it for me soon. I'm going to install a grind to fit Limbsaver on it also. I bought it to hunt with but like the wood as opposed to the laminates or synthetic. I just want it to be a little Handier. ;D

That's a good one. Usually standing room only at "The Trough".

I had the same questions for the same reasons!! I cut and restocked to a configuration that suited my hunting needs. Barrel at 24" and stocked with a high comb (for scope) and recoil pad.

I have a grind to fit Limbsaver butt pad that I want to put on my Buffalo Classic, I just have to get up enough nerve to make that first cut on the stock.   :'(

I am considering the same thing with my BC.  I have one question though, is there an easy way to do this shortening?  Can I cut the barrel to the length that I want then dress the inside and outside diameters?  Or, does this require a muzzle ream?  Thanks.

The proper way is to have the end faced and crowned on a lathe. it's simple and should be inexpensive to get done by a competent gun smith.

SRO is very true but it looks like the buzzards on the edges with the quick fingers also make out quite well

44 Man, You seem to like that long barrel. So why don't you buy a 22 in. Handi barrel or have one fitted at the factory,if you want to wait that long. But it's your gun, do what YOU want to do. Hunman55
