Waiting on Tikka T-3
« on: May 01, 2003, 01:34:58 PM »
Well, I knew, I just knew it, listing to Zachary all the time about those Tikka's.  Went to the gunstore today to have my son-in-laws Remington 700 rebarrel and after I got finish, I just add to ask.  "By any chance to you have a Tikka T-3, no, but we got some coming in, oh what caliber, well I just don't remember except for one which will be a 30-06 stainless steel, oh, well will you put my name down for the first refusal, will be glad to Doug, oh, thank you so much. Oh boy, Oh boy, Zachary I was thinking of you right then.

You know whats going to happen when it comes in don't you, I'll buy it since I don't have a 30-06.  I would like to have had it more if it was 270 or 7-08.  Might just look at it and get a feel and then order another one in the caliber I want.

Zachary didn't answer my question on a another topic.  Can you purchase aftermarket stocks for T-3's and if so, where.  What kind of stock comes with a stainless steel or blue and who makes the base/rings for the rifle.

dbuck,

Sorry if I didn't answer you question on another post - I guess I must have over seen it.

Anyway, I don't know who, if anyone, makes after market stocks for the Tikkas, especially the T-3s.  I would think that, since the T-3s are brand-spanking new (actually not even available yet), that no one has after market stocks for them.  In fact, I don't even think that anyone has after market stocks for the older Whitetail versions.

As for scope rings and bases - I recently received an order of Warne Tikka Silver Scope rings.  They cost about $38 plus shipping which is MUCH better than the $100+ for Tikka rings and bases.  BTW, the Warne rings are just rings, and they work VERY VERY well.  I HIGHLY recommend them.

I must admit, dbuck, that I have never felt a T-3 in my hands.  As such, even I don't know if I will necessarily like it (but I'll bet you that I would).  The action is still basically the same, and so is the barrel - it's essentially the stock that is different.

BTW, I think that a Tikka T-3 Stainless in 30-06 sounds like a winner to me!

dbuck,

Hope you like it.

I have heard that the barrell will be a thinner profile, and they will more than likely have cheap Winchester/Remington stocks.  Where else are they going to lose 1 pound?

Local dealer has 50-60 of them on order.  I'll definitely go check them out.

I hope they are nice, now that I'm spoiled by my Whitetail Hunter SS, I'm hoping to add more in other calibers......otherwise I'll have to look for a used one.

Good luck,

Steve

I wonder if it is better to get the Whitetail Hunter version then the T-3.  I heard the trigger guard was plastic on the Hunter.

dbuck,

Kind of a crap shoot.  The T3 may turn out to be the better of the two, but from what Zachary has said and what I am now finding out, the Hunter IS GREAT....

My way of thinking is that a heavier duty stock on the Hunter is more rigid which contributes to consistency/accuracy.  Also, if the barrel on the Hunter does prove to be thicker, it to will help accuracy considerably.

The Hunter's trigger guard is a plastic composite material (think Glock), the T3 is an alloy (?).

If I were you, and I was less than three weeks ago, I'd try to find a Hunter.  Otherwise, get the T3, and give us a thorough review.

I got a feeling you'll be happy with whichever you end up with.

Good luck,
Steve

Steve,

All my M1A's for match shooting have been heavy stocks and most people I know who shoot match also uses heavy stocks and put weight inside the buttplate, this is for accuracy and has been proven time and time again.

I understand that when you are hunting you don't want to carry around a 10# rifle, but I think you can also go to far the other way.

What surprises me is why no one has come up with an aftermarket metal trigger guard for the white hunter.  I guess its a matter of numbers, you can buy anything for a Remington 700 in aftermarket because they are so popular, thats why its are to pull away from them.

Another problem I have is that my gunstore will just have the T-3's coming in and that's fine, I can hold it, feel it, etc.  The white hunter I would have to buy on everyone's word (I have never laid eyes on one of these rifles except pictures), but like the man said, "you bought, you eat it".  If I like the T-3 I will purchase it, if not I won't.

You know this whole thing on guns is subjective anyway, thats why their are so many out their.  What one person likes one rifle another person doesn't.  Its the old Chevy vs Ford thing. It is alot of fun through.

dbuck,

I know what you mean.  I love to feel a gun before I buy, luckily the dealer I bought mine through had a 30-06 so I could compare.

As far as weight, I sold a perfectly good (like new) Remington Model 7 to get the Whitetail Hunter.  At 6lbs, the model 7 was so muzzle light, I could barely hold it off hand.  I prefer a well balanced gun.

Until, any of us actually holds a T3, this is obviously total speculation.
