Lansky Sharpener?
« on: January 10, 2007, 06:53:48 AM »
I had bought a Lansky sharpener and tried it out this weekend. The idea behind it [setting exact angles] sounded like a great idea. I gave it a test with an old pocket knife and the results were good. Then I tried it on my K bar Marine fighting knife [the dullest knife in my colection] with dismall results. Because there was no real flat spot for the clamp to tighten down on the large blade knife moved all over and with the introduction of the cutting oil it was imposible to use. After a self inflicted cut I got PO'ed and put it away. I tightened it down as hard as I dared without stripping it out.........but I am at a loss..........dose anyone have a trick or two that they use with one of these?......Jim

It's been years since I used a Lansky, or any other fixed angle sharpener for that matter.  What I did do when I had a blade that was the wrong shape or too large to fit in the wee groove on the blade holder was to clamp the blade farther up on the flat, ignoring the groove.  This changed the blade angle a bit, but didn't seem to affect it too much.

I've used one since I was 18, and I'll be 31 this year.  I've sharpened pen knives with 1" blades of plain carbon steel and "jungle" knives with 10" blades of 3/16" ATS-34.  I've used it on several Ontario ka-bars, it was the only way I could get them sharp.  On large blades I just set the clamp as far down against the back of the blade as I can, almost against the screw in the clamp.  I use a screwdriver on the slotted screw and a multi-tool to tighten the thumb screw so the blade doesn't move.  I've never stripped it out, and I'm using my original clamp and screw.  I use the oil very lightly on the stones, and I wipe them off and re-oil very often.  Then it's not so sloppy.

I've recently started using a pull-through type sharpener.  It sets the angle, although you can't change it, and it sharpens knives pretty well.  Plus, you can carry it in your pocket or pack easily.  The Lansky's are nice, but time consuming.
