.25acp conversion on encore breech plug?
« on: January 08, 2007, 05:50:06 AM »
Is there any reason I can or can not have a standard breech plug machined to be able to put .25acp case and primer in? kurtheckman@insightbb.com

I should think the 25 case would be as strong as a shotgun primer body but 'WHY'?? The shotgun primers are so strong they almost reach the point of excess... You would be loosing primer flash by switching to a 25 case and its much smaller primer.. If you're considering adding a booster charge to the 25 case I'd be very careful. The case will likely NOT retain pressure from almost any charge of black powder on it's own and there's likely no good way to extend the existing breech plug for added support..

That's the whole point of doing it is the shotgun primers have way to much flash to the point of much fouling and even pushing the charge and bullet up the barrel before ignition there is a company that sells this conversion already complete but it's $60 for the breech plug and if I already got breech plug well why spend another$60 when the 25 primer and case has been proved to work well and improve accuracy. I'm mostly just trying to find if anyone else has done it themselves. Thanks for your input though. Kurt

Does the Encore system use a seperate primer holder screwed into the breech plu? If it does simply buy a holder for percussian caps or musket caps..

I have never found that theory to be true in my experience.  If you think you are having accuracy problems because of this, I would try the new Winchester 777 209 primers which are supposed to be less powerful and cleaner and do the same thing as the 25 ACP adapter.
