well guys it looks as if I may be getting my long desired .45 ACP Handi, it will not be right away and I will have to wait a few months to make it happen but rest assured, as soon as it becomes a reality I will post pictures and a write up on it. Heck I might even write an article on it for publication!!! I really think the .45 ACP is going to be a great camp and plinking gun, I have shot a lot of .45 ACP and have come to really enjoy it's simplicity, accuracy, and effectiveness. I have always liked large caliber comparitively slow moving bullets and have been amazed at thier effects on game. I have found the .45 ACP a joy to reload with an almost unlimited number of loadings per case. I am looking forward to shooting some Kieth design semi wadcutters as well as some of those teacup size HP's and SP's in more potent laodings. Now this will be a fun gun!!! Well I think I have just named it, "Fun-Gun"? of well, a possibility at least. Perhaps after I post a picture and a write up I will have a contest or poll to name it if you guys would be willing to offer some opinions, and I believe by past expierneces we do have opinions here in great numbers!!!! I have pondered a 16.25" handi by means of an epoxy stub configuration in 45 acp or 9mm. Both would use available extractors, 308 for the 45 and 223 for the 9mm.  I just haven't taken the plunge yet.....

With the world's best pistol cartridge now available as a factory option, I can't help but ask why pay more for less?  In it's intended platform the .45ACP is a great cartridge.  Wouldn't the .45 Auto Rim or Schofield be better in a Handi?
How about the .455?  There are lots of strange cartridges that will under perform the .45 Colt.

There is a large group of individuals who love the 45 ACP for itself, no matter how many other calibers may outperform it.  For this group, the 45 ACP speaks for itself. Those that would have to ask "Why?", would not understand even if someone tried to explain it. (Same as why a 7x57, when there is a 280, why a 30-30 or 308 when there is a 30-06 or why a 35 Remington when there is a 35 Whelen.))

Of course, some will try to pick it apart just to to engage in confrontation or to draw attention to themselves..

I understand that, and I'm not picking it apart.  For the price of a .45ACP barrel, a person can buy a very nice reloading outfit that will allow the .45 Colt to duplicate .45ACP velocities.  Or they could just shoot cowboy loads.  Some folks shoot .45ACP in their Ruger Blackhawks too.  I've never been able to see the logic in that either.  I guess just because is reason enough.

No...not really...For you...some things don't make sense..and you can't see the need to bother with a paticular conversion ...For others...they see it from a different perspective...The difference is when a persons own logic closes their eyes to another idea or possiblity,and they automaticly dismisses it and then argue with that person for something they want...You just need to understand everyone has different wants and desires...and they may not make sense to you...it may not be logical to you..and seem foolish when other cartridges seem so much better to you.... But ...They have a right to get what they want...wither they may not be valid in your own reasoning...That's what makes us unique individuals.......Arguing about it..does no one any good...

Thanks guys, I am anxiously anticiating the end of the gestation period of my long anticpated .45 ACP Handi and look forward to it's birthing process. You know swampy, some guys like canoes and some guys like jet skis...then again most recently I have been enjoying my kayaks.....where does that leave me???....<><.... ;)

Wet most likely, I too would like a .45 ACP handi thou. I have a 1911 and a mauser( in work useing the Rhineland arms kit) I cast my own bullets and have a dillin square deal B press .45 are easy, cheap, and fun.  I don't need any more convincing the the fun part thou. By BTW my current mode of water transport is a Gheenoe with a trolling motor, good fun in the rivers around here.

 MSP Ret, Your thoughts of a 45 ACP is the same as mine the barrel rebore
 and recambered, 223 Rem to a 25=35 win. It's what I wanted. Don't let
 any body talk you out of it! ( less it is the wife), I yhink a bad 44 mag
 barrel could be made for 45 ACP. Just my 2 cents. Have you been to Maine??

Is there a reason to believe the .44 Magnum barrels SPORTSMAN'S GUIDE is selling aren't overbored .44 Magnum barrels NEF may have dumped because they were overbored?

Hi Marv, I am supposed to get up this weekend!!! I will be taking some mid range 7MM's loaded with gas checked lead bullets to about 1500 fps. I will  index and fire in the RB, if I shoot a couple and they are close to the bull at say 40-50 yards after boresighting I just may try to use it on a coyote if I get the chance. I might as well fireform some brass and do a little coyote hunting at the same time. If I don't feel it is up to the task with the loads I have made up for it I will use something else (until the .45 ACP becomes a reality). Thanks for the encouraging words of wisdom and expierence as well as the RB. I value what you say....<><.... :)

I wondered this as well. I guess there is no way to see exactly untill someone orders one and sluggs it out. That or by some odd luck someone could convince the SG folks to pull one and slug it.. :-\

Thanks for the info on the barrel blanks. I wonder if they are just barrel blanks or do they have the barrel lugs affixed? If so are they machined out for ejectors or extractors, if extractors which setup, the first or second (current) run of extractors. Or by some chance are they all set with complete ejectors or extractors? I get the feelings they are just barrel blanks with no lugs attached....Does anyone know for sure yet?....<><.... ???

If you click on the pic at the link, you can take a look at the blanks up close and personal, I don't think I'd want one if they look as bad as that one, zoom in on it and look at it the entire barrel. ::) It's also too small to fit a frame without a stub, it's only 13/16" diameter, an H&R barrel is  1.1" at the breech.

It seems they may have a little surface rust, and there appears to be no underlug. So I believe it would be best suited for a Stubbing Project. 
Still, my curiosity has got the best of me. I will contact them tomorrow and see if I can get some more measurements on the barrel and some more info. I have delt with their CS before and it's absolutely excellent!
I'll post back with what I find tomorrrow  ;)

We all have the right to want what we want.  But I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want a low power pistol cartridge in a rifle.  To me it seems like a waste of a perfectly good rifle.  Would make a good plinker, or something to train kids with I guess.  I just have a hard time understanding it.  Again I don't begrudge you wanting it.  You have the right to have anything you want, and good luck with it.  Rog

Thanks guys, and Sourdough old buddy I do appreciate your candor. I do love your stories and realize that your gun needs are different than mine with you living up in Alaska and all with those 350-400 yard shots on coyotes and all. I am lucky to see 1/10th of that distance where I hunt in Maine for the most part. Getting back to my long anticiipated .45 ACP Handi, this is goiing to be a real "fun gun" that I am sure will stand on it's own 2 hind legs and give up nothing to anyone. I have heard the .45 ACP called lot of things in the many years I have been shooting it but underpowered has not been one of them. Most specialized uniits (Military and Law Enforecment) Federal, State, and Local agencies included, opt for that old standby when given the choice. It may be old but it's not dead yet. I am getting this for the best of reasons, I want it and have wanted it for a long time and finally may have a way for it to become a reality....I can hardly contain myself in anticipiation of it becomeing a reality....coyotes, porupines, squirrels, crows, tin cans, clumps of mud, and all other vermin and targets beware!!!!....<><.... :)

Plus many Police departments are using "tacticle semi-auto carbines" chambered in 9mm, 40 S&W, and the 45ACP for close combat situations. Like the Berretta Storms:

Though I am sure MSP isn't exactly going for the whole tactile combat thing, but it just shows that the pistol carbines are well in use today. Be it for protection or fun  :)
