Accurate 25-06 in an older model
« on: January 07, 2007, 03:56:51 PM »
I am going to start to look for a 24" barrel 25-06 in a 10 year or older gun.  Do any of you gents have a 25-06 that has been very accurate?  I am having a rough time trying to find the 24" barrel but for a couple manufactuers.  I thought a winter project in late winter in Minnesota would be fun.

Thanks  Buckfever

Take a look at the new Ruger Hawkeye.  I have a 9 year old Ruger M77 with a Nikon Monarch 3*9 scope.  Perfect for whitetail and mule deer with low recoil, but not enough for Elk.  Mine shoots 3/4 inch groups consistently with Hornady and Sierra handloads.  Watch the copper fouling though... it is a pain in the butt.  Figure on using a good copper cleaner (ammonia or the new spray foaming stuff)  to clean it.  Those take the headache out of .25-06 ownership.
I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

I have a 25-06 in a Browning BBR.  I purchased it the first year the BBR was produced.  The BBR preceeded the A-bolt.  I suppost it is 25+  years old.

Still shoots great.  Loves 100 gr bullets but does well with 117-120.

There are some old M700 BDL's out there with a 24" tube, though not many as the owners tend to hold on to them. Rem. std cals are 22" for the most part, but wisely the 24" BDL & Var. Special was 24", they were the first to introduce the wildcat as a std. round
& they understood it's ballistics. Also the Ruger 77 has a 24" barrel, the other Ruger std. cal 77';s I am aware of have 22" tubes, nice to see that Ruger also understood the round & even gave us a fatter barrel, more like a mag, nice & smart. My brother had a wood
stock version he bought back in the mid 70's (seen many a varmit & Deer meet their doom by this gun), my nephew owns it now &
it's a shooter. I had a Ruger Stainless with the skeleton stock, had it bedded but still was not accurate enough to keep, but I have seen others that are.

I have a 1968 or'69 vintage Remington 700 in 25-06 with 24" barrel. Has had a lot of rounds down the barrel, but still puts it's favored loads under 1". Never shot anything below 100 grain, so don't know what it does with varmint bullets. I think the older 700's are good guns, and there is certainly no shortage of goodies to ad on if you so desire.
