CZ in 30-06 - accuracy loads - 168gr
« on: January 07, 2007, 03:34:58 AM »
I'm working with a friend's CZ (mine is in .223) in .30-06 .   Trying to get 1" groups with 168's.  Tried 4350 with (surprizingly) no luck - groups ranged from 3" to 0.49".  No real consistancy.

HELP!

(My 527 does under 1/2" groups all day long!)

Hmmm why do you use the 168 grn bulelts?

After all the Plama Match shooters seem to use 155 grn bullets. May I suggest you try some of this weight  :).

The 168's (165's) are for elk - the owner of the CZ has been doing well out to 500 yards using the Hornady hand loaded 30-06 'Light Magnums'.  Reaching out that far it's a choice of 168's or 180's to carry that far.   Starting with Matchking HPBT to establish baseline of accuracy, then switch to hunting bullets to fine tune it.  We'll end up with a good varmint load in the process.

I think I got it figured out.  3 trips to the range this weekend.

Switching to a faster powder (WW748) and first 4 shot group dropped in at 3/4".  Then things opened up - I think because of heat/rapid firing.

More testing due.

Ahhhhh now I see.

In my .30-06 P-H 1100 I had been using 165 Grn Speers and whilst accuracy was fair it was not as good as I would have liked, running low ont eh 165's I opened up an old box (had for several years unopened) of Speer 180 Grn BT's and tried them and they seem to be perform a little better. So far the powder used has been Rel 19 perhaps I should also try a slightly faster powder.

Good luck with your testing  ;)

Tried 165gr Noslers with 4350 and WLR primers.  1-1/2" groups at 55 and 59 gr.  Inbetween it opened up a bit, but I think that was because of heating.

I tried to keep temparature a constant, by measuring bore temperature to start at the same point each time.  By letting it cool to 72dF (from 94dF after 4 shots) I could keep groups smaller.

Hi There,

I have just been thinking about this. Have you ever heard of the Quick Load programme?

It works out the timing nodes and predicts the best "nodes" for accuracy. I don't have it as I ahve never seen it offered for sale and I doubt my computer could run it as it's too old. But it might be a good idea to look at it.  :)

I've heard of it (quickloads), but was unaware of it's capabilities.

To predict nodes/anodes is a tremendously usefull tool - especially if you can dial in different characteristics of the barrel - length, diameter, taper and perhaps presence of a resonator.  Even having some of these features would be worth the price of admission.

Hmmm well I am sorry to say thta I know very little about the programme only having seen some of the print outs for suggested loads from it. It sure seems a handy tool perhaps one day if I can get a newer computer which is capapble of running it I will investigate further. Until then I will keep feeding the Mouse which powers this old thing  :D.
