Removing front sight on Win 94 Trapper
« on: April 29, 2003, 05:33:00 PM »
I need to remove the front sight from my Win 94 Trapper.  It is dovetailed in the barrel, no ramp.  I used a plastic punch that came with the Ashley sight.  Clamped it into a vise and used a really big hammer.  Sight will not budge.  Let some oil soak into the dovetail, still no luck.  Only thing I can think that might help is a brass punch, I will borrow one from work Wednesday.

Can anyone else give me any ideas to get this sight out of the dovetail.

Thanks.

For the really stuck ones I use a polished steel punch.  It was a cheap cold chisel that I flattened the edge too about 3/16 inch.  I then slightly cupped it on the long axis.  This trough was then polished.  It fits on the curved ends of these in barrel sights and a heavy ball peen hammer supplies the force.  A sight pusher is the only way if a ramp is involved but a punch will work just fine on the barrel mounted sights.  The brass punch will deform easily and will leave marks on the steel.  They can usually be removed with OxphoBlue(cold blue) or fine steel wool(lighter marks).

Thanks gunnut69.  I brought a brass punch home from work and got the sight out with a ball been hammer half the size I was using with the plastic punch that came with the sight.  That brass probably does not deform as much and transmitts more force to the sight because that sucker came out easy.

Oh well, we live and we learn.  At least nothing was screwed up in the process this time.
