Tikka T3 laminated stock problems?
« on: January 01, 2007, 08:44:25 PM »
I'm searching for a lightweight elk rifle.  Over the weekend, I handled a Tikka T3 laminated in 338 WM.  Really liked it's feel and handling.  However, I've been doing some research and have ran across a not-insignificant number of examples of the recoil lug cracking the stock in this rifle/stock/cartridge combination.  Some of these examples are recent, so I gather that this hasn't been addressed by the factory.  Comments?

I really liked this rifle.  Is there a reasonable preventative measure?

Thanks,

Dan

There isn't a recoil lug to speak of on the tikka T3, just a loose groove in the action and a piece of metal that fits loosely in the stock and action.  My stock split after less than 100 rounds.  Unfortunately for me since I had a muzle break installed on my rifle beretta usa wasn't going to warrantee the damage.  I was unpleased.  If you want a nice lightweight elk gun I would look to the kimber montana in 338 win, much nice rifle all around.   If your heart is set on the tikka they can put a tubs, remington 700 style, recoil lug onto the rifle but it will cost you a few hundred bucks for the work and you loose a little bit of barrel length.  The synthetics on the other hand seem to be doing pretty well with thier setup so might be worth looking into.  Myself I will never own another tikka or sako, nothing that beretta USA has a hand in.
