Barrel to action torque Rem 580
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:45:21 PM »
I am doing a conversion to 22 Hornet of a Remington 582 RF.  This is a fairly common conversion, it is done in lots of low pressure short case loadings.  Question I have is that I have the action and barrel threaded in 11/16th 20, I have it shimmed to get the extractor cutout in the proper place, now I need to know the proper torque for the barrel to action.  Anyone with any experience with installing this diameter and thread pitch on a rifle?  Larry

Funny, I'm building a standard silhouette rifle on a Rem 580 action now too. I threaded mine to 11/16 - 24, but same idea. I'll probably torque it to about 30 ft/lbs or so. It doesn't have to be extremely tight, and torque isn't going to be real critical either. Just snug it up enough to not come loose. I have a couple of questions for you though. You said you're using shims to get the extractor cuts in the right place. This implies you cut the slots before you cut the shank to length and chambered it? How are you going to control headspace this way? The other question is how are you going to eject a fired case? They're quite a bit longer than the ejection port. I thought about doing one of these in hornet, and I think it'll almost work if the bolt stop notch on the bolt was cut as far forward as possible, and the ejection port was milled back as far as possible, but it would still be really tight. I decided a .22 squirrel would be a better choice, or something based on the 25 or 32 ACP case. Tell us how you did it, I have a couple more of these actions I'd like to build a centerfire with someday. BTW, I figured out how to make the trigger adjustable. They are truly superb set up like this, and way superior to the aftermarket triggers available.

I torqued mine to 30 ft pounds, seems good to me.  I used a new take off CZ 22 hornet barrel, so the extractor was already cut.  I will head space it by trimming the length of the bolt head or adding shims where it goes into the locking lug portion of the bolt.  The hornet case should eject, to eject a loaded round you will have to remove the bolt. This the barreled action.  Larry

Looks good! That's going to be a neat rifle when it's done. What style bolt did you go with? Does it have the hook extractors like the Rem or did you make one with a Sako style extractor? We'd better be careful talking about these rifles, people will find out how neat they are and make the price go up!

I haven't decided on the extractor, kind of leaning towards the hook style, but what ever I can machine in easily I will use.  This is the barreled action in the stock as of tonight.  Larry

Have you fired the rifle yet?  What did you do for a centerfire firing pin?   I expect that you had to make another one.   Is the firing pin spring strong enough to set off the primer?  Just curious.

I haven't fired it yet, I need to make the bolt head, fit the ejector, extractor and fireing pin.  The drawings I have suggest a modified AR15 pin, they are cheap so I will try that first.  Wish I could just work on this full time, but I have to go to Sea for a month now, so the project will be on hold for a while.  It does look good, I hope the weight can come in at a little over 5 pounds with a scope.  Larry
