chrome plating rifle bore
« on: January 01, 2007, 01:43:22 PM »
Years ago I read a story about hunting rifles by the late Col. Chas. Askins and he said he had the bores of his favorite hunting rifles chrome plated in order to better resist corrosion and the elements.  That's the only time I remember ever seeing that issue raised.

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions about chrome plating of rifle bores?

I only have one rifle with a chromed bore; a 25 year old National Match M1A.  After running thousands of rounds through that tube over the years, I can only say that it still looks new inside, and is capable of shooting much better than I can fire it.

I can't comment on the technical aspects of having this done, but I wish that all my centerfires had it.  They clean easily, and foul very little.

Igm270:  many countries chrome plated thier military rifle bores after WWII for longer life.  Both my AKSs and one of my SKSs have chrome lined bores.  I believe the M16 of today has a chrome lined bore as well.  Been a practice for a while.  HTH.  Mikey.

I thought Browning is doing that with the WSSM line??  Not sure though.

Typically, chrome bores are not as accurate.  This is definately not always true.  Just a generalization.

For example, if you buy a factory Colt AR15, it is going to have a chrome bore.  If you have a custom built, it is highly unlikely to be chrome.

I can see the need for a chrome bore on a military rifle, but a sporter???
