S&W 19 Info?
« on: January 01, 2007, 09:30:31 AM »
I found out the Model 15 I was getting is a model 19 instead.  Can someone tell me about it?

Model 15 is a .38 Special. The Model 19 is a .357 Magnum. Both are K-frame guns. The 19 was made with 2.5", 4" and 6" barrel lengths. That first one might have been a fraction different than 2.5" but was under 3".

The Model 19 with 6" barrel was my second S&W I think, seems I bought a Model 36 Cheif's Special before it. I shot that gun in competition matches around here for a few years and won my very first ever trophy in competition with it. Nice guns. I still have a Model 66 6" which is the SS version of the Model 19. The 19 was made in both blued and nickel plated versions.

It's not as strong as the later L-frame guns (586/686/etc) but I've never found them lacking in strength for reasonable loads. I have no clue how many thousands of rounds went down the barrel of that first one of mine but for sure they were hotter than what the books list now and it was still finely accurate when I let it go for who knows what after all these years.

You'll enjoy many years of fine service from that Model 19 I'm sure.

Graybeard said it all. I recently got into handguns, and bought a S&W 686, 6" barrel. I love that gun. I found a 19, nickel finish, 2.5" barrel and brought that home a couple months later. The 19 fits my hand better, and has fine workmanship. If I find a 4" barrelled 19, I am sure it well come with home me!!

Well, I made a mistake!  My big sis will be giving me a Model 10, not a model 19.  I looked at it today.  It's in excellent shape, with very little bluewear.

What are your opinions on this revolver?

I think that the M19 is a masterpiece, in form and usefulness. The M14 is my second favorite, and a .38 target gun I want in my collection permanently... But, the M10 is the quintessential S&W revolver. When I think about all the times I've seen it on a policeman's hip, in a soldier's holster, or in the movies... It's what I think of when I think of a Smith and Wesson.

I've been trying to get a hold of one myself, but whenever one is for sale, I'm low on cash! My opinion is that you should take it and shoot it!

How about pictures and a range report? :D

A model 10 is a fixed sight 38 spl. and like was said, the 19 is a 357 mag....  That is unless you did what i did and have the 19 converted into a 5 shot 44 spl...   8)

The mod. 19 is one of my all time favorite handguns...

My first S&W was a 2.5" 19. Great gun for concealed carry. However, one of my best buys ever was my 4" 10-5, pinned, pencil barrel. One of the most accurate guns I have ever seen. I'd love to see someone who can really shoot have a go with it! You'll love it!

Hello
Here is what a model 19 Looks like with a 4" Barrel. They are a K-frame revolver that was designed for a lighter daily carry police issue revolver. The Only issue I have heard from them is some had a problem of the trigger stop getting Loose over time and this binds the action up. A simple cure is to remove the side plate and take the small screw out that holds the trigger stop and apply a little Lock tight to it. I hope this helps. Hammerdown.
