Hogue Rifle Stocks
« on: December 30, 2006, 09:34:12 AM »
So I have 2 Howa Varmint model rifles. One a 308 and the other a 243. These are not range master tactical monsters, they are my hunting rifles. I use the heavyer barrels simply for my benefit (I'm able to hold them more steady). Yes they do enjoy some range time, and yes I do enjoy them being accurate but Im not going to be doing any competitions with them. That said....I need a new stocks for them. Im really looking hard at the Hogue pillar beaded stocks. Right price, right features, and comes with a heavy barrel channel for the howa (This has been a big issue while researching). Does anyone have any specific reasons I shouldn't look at these stocks? Anything I need to know?
Thanks all

I have been looking into the same stocks as they are very affordable and have some good features. I have been mulling over the rubberized over-molded thing.   While it sounds great from a grip perspective I have been thinking I would rather have the non-rubberized type.  While shooting from a rest I prefer an ability to freely move the stock forwards and back without the hindrance of "grip".  Free hand I think a non rubberized type would slide in the palm easier.  With the rubber I would think felt recoil might increase, at least slightly, as the natural rearward movement of the stock would be impeded.  If so, that energy would then transfer directly to the shooter.  I doubt the difference would be enough to shorten my range time but you asked for thoughts on it so there you are.  That might be BS - just musing.   I believe Hogue sells non-rubberized stocks with aluminum blocks or pillars as well.  Let us know what you get and how you like it.

I have two of the basic overmoulded stocks; one on a .30/06 and the other on a 10/22. So far I have no complaints. I've heard others say that Hogue makes the best cheap stocks. I can't say that for sure, but I'm happy with mine. If I were stepping up to the better quality stock, then I'd probably get the Bell and Carlson.

I can't say the stocks are very pretty, but they work well.

IMO there's nothing better to have when you're faced with wet/rainy/freezing rain/ice conditions like we often are in Alaska.  At least when you grab hold of the rifle you can hang on to it.
