My progress with the 460
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:57:41 PM »
I purchased the 460 because of the accuracy claims.  I originally intended to deer hunt with a 240 gr XTP/MAG bullet at max velocity.  The cost of practicing with that load is prohibiting and the best accuracy I could obtain from a bench was 4 inch groups at 100 yards.  The flat trajectory of this load is wasted on me because I like a revolver because I enjoy walking a lot while I hunt and I don’t like carrying a rifle.  I would never attempt an off hand shot over 100 yards so a slower and cheaper bullet would serve me just as well.  I’ve settled on a hard cast 300 gr gas checked bullet, pushed by 38 gr of H4198.  The velocity is only 1300 feet/second but the reduced recoil allows me to control the gun much better.  I have gotten 5 shot groups at 100 yards of 1.5 inches.  This is a load I can afford to practice with for my style of hunting.  If I ever get a 200 yard shot I’ll just need to use Steady Sticks and hold 24 inches high.  This will probably never happen since most the deer I take are within 50 yards.

An even cheaper bullet to shoot is Lee’s 405 gr hollow base.  I load it with 32 grains of H4198 and I have had groups as small as 2 inches.  Leading with both loads is not a problem.

I had great results with the 200 gr. Hornady rounds in my 460 Mag. I also don't shoot them any longer because I like the 300 gr. Hard cast bullets. But I can get more velocity out of my 300 gr. bullet in my 460 Mag than I can out of my 454 Casull. So the 460 Mag was a better choice for me.

I don't go by velocity though, I work up loads and find the most accurate, if the velocity is up there and the accuracy is good, that is what I use.

But you have found reloading is the best way to shot the 460 Mag a lot more.  ;)

Don't you think the 460 is a lot of fun?  ;D

I agree with redhawk1, go with the best accuracy :)  If your not making your own bullets check midway usa.  They carry a lot of cast bullets.  I am surprised with your groupings with the hornady 240gr xtp.  That is my bullet with 44gr of w296 and I have great groupings with that.  But you know every barrel is different ;D  Hope this helps.

reallybigfoot, Montana Bullet works has great prices on 300 gr. cast bullets. I use the ones he has listed for the 45 colt. They are hard cast with a gas check, listed as the Wide Flat Nose -Gas Checked. I get the best accuracy with them. in my 460 Mag.  They are $57.00 for 500 of them plus shipping of I think $8 to $12.

This will probably never happen since most the deer I take are within 50 yards.

Thats what went through my dad's head when he bought his first handgun to hunt deer. A .357 Magnum.

Do you really need all that power with the 460 then?

I don't want to limit myself to a 50 yards shot only. So in my opinion that extra power may not always be need but when I do need it, it is there.

With the speed limit at 65, my truck will do 100. Is all that power needed, no but then again when I want it, it is there.  ;D

Redhawk, I think you talked me into buying a new 460.  I liked your analogy about the truck.  I have a Performance Center Stealth Hunter in 44 mag.  I think it is time for the 460.  Tom.

HEAD0001, I know you won't be disappointed at all. I have several buddies that got them and they love them. The 460 has become one of my favorite handgun rounds.   ;D

Shocked was more like it. LOL :D

Lloyd, I get 500 of the 300 gr. for 74.75 plus shipping from Montana bullet works.  Cheaper than 500 of them XTP Mags.

In about 3 weeks my work load will pick back up, and I won't have time to shoot as much as I do in the Winter months.
