CZ 550 meduim 300 win mag
« on: December 27, 2006, 08:38:19 AM »

I was looking at the new CZ 550 and I am considering one.Price is $621.00 + TAX. It is the 300 Win Mag. Gun looks good for the money, wood and fit are ok. The action is a little rough but I think it would smooth up. Trigger seems excellant. Rifle is a little heavy, but I can live with that. All the reviews indicate that this a excellant rifle for the money. I would like to hear from anyone that has one or shoots the cz. I have owned remington model 700 bdl in the past. I want a rifle that funtions flawlessly in the field under hunting conditions and does not break the bank.

Although I don't have one in 300 Win Mag, I do have one in 416 Rigby. I love the gun. I like the single set trigger, action is smooth and it is a tack driver.  ;D

Would you consider it the best value for the money, considering everything for a good hunting rifle. Did you have to smooth up the action on your 416. Thanks

I think it is a great rifle for the money, I did not have to do anything with the action, I just cleaned the gun up real good and lubed the action up and cycled it several times.
I did however have it glass bedded and the barrel floated. I get 1 inch groups with it at 100 yards, not bad with a .416 diameter bullet.  ;D

When people post about the CZ 550 the term of "rough cycling" comes up. Maybe I have been lucky with the CZs I have, and so has my brother with the three he owns, and his hunting buddy with the one he has, but none of the actions on these rifles were rough. That's three folks living hundreds of miles apart buying six CZ rifles and none of the actions were rough. At the same time, none were glass smooth and with the exception of a custom rifle actions need some cycling. All of the rifles I merntioned have been exceptional shooters, all have triggers which are easily adjusted for pull weight, creep and over-travel and yes, all have been a tad on the heavy side. Wood to metal fit has been very good. If that .300 WM turns your crank, buy it. Even though there have been price hikes since I first purchased my first rifle, they are still, in my opinion, the best rifle for the dollars on the open market today. Tom Purdom

Thanks for the info. I will take a good look at the CZ 550. The 30 06 can still be bought for around 525.00. But the 300 WM, I cant find that reasonable. I have not seen any used ones for sale. That maybe a good thing. Woudl you trust your 416 for very dangerous game at close ranges, such as a Cape Buffalo or large bear. Thanks

Yes I would.  I have shot about 250 to 300 rounds at the range, I did not have any feed problems, misfires, extraction problems what so ever. I have been very impressed with the CZ. I have Sako, Browning's, Tikka and Remington rifles and I can say the CZ ranks right up with the best of them.  I would buy another CZ in a heart beat.

Redhawk1, I talked to Whitakers Guns today, best deal on CZ 550 300 WM. They only had one and they are holding it for me until Jan 4,2007. With Shipping and FFL,I will be out a total of $550.00. that was the best I could find anywhere and only one in stock. They may go up in price in 2007,nobody knows yet.I am thinking about selling my 7mm rem mag model 700 BDL. Excellant rifle,I just never shoot it.I did have a question  where is the best place to get scope Rings. The med mags come with sights, but no rings.I am going to put a Vari x 111  50mm   scope, need the high rings. If anyone is interested in the remington I will think about it. Thanks

ronangelia7 that sounds like a good price. As far as rings, I got mine from CZ, I ordered them when I ordered my rifle. Let us know how you make out.

you can also buy rings from Talley. They are pricey, but darn good rings. CZ sells its rings for about $50. I paid $85 for my rings. I think Warne makes rings as well for the CZ 550 and the CZ 527. Good luck. Tom Purdom
