What makes the Handi-rifle so great?
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:26:30 PM »
Hi , all.

So, let's hear what makes a Handi-rifle so great. ;D    Looking at a single shot varmint rifle that I won't have to mortgage the farm to buy. ;D

Not mortgaging is what makes them so great.  For 2 or 3 times the money you would complain about the general finish and wood.  The way it is, you get an accurate, easy handling, easy carrying gun.  It does everything you need, is simple in operation and you don't worry about taking it out and using it.  You can find calibers all the way from .17 to .45.  Soime of the faults we have are also found on expensive stuff.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

I don't know if they are great or if they are not.  What I do know is I have a lot of fun with my 243 handi at a very low price.

Kenny is 100% right on every point except it's available in calibers up to .500!! ;D

I recently bought an Encore handgun frame and built a .375H&H rifle out of it in addition to a 7mm-08 handgun. My experience thus far have shown it to have a lot of the same issues, but costs twice as much!! Time will tell if it's as accurate as my NEFs and H&Rs. ;)

Just be careful, they're very addicting!! :D

When I first heard of them I thought I would look into NEF/H&Rs a little more. I broke down and ordered a 223 H&R "Ultra" 223 BB...my first of now a growing library of Handis.
I admit freely that I had a little frusterations with it. But If I had polished the bore the little things would not have persisted as long as they did.
I am SO glad I didn't trade off this rifle, as of now it will out perform all my rifles other than my XR. Now it shoots ALWAYS under 1" it's my go to rifle for all varmints, and usually shoots off the bench 1/2 and under with some good consentration and at best it's cutting holes from the last shot.
If you want a good reliable, versitile, and accurate firearm that won't break the bank then go for one. If you are extremely dissapointed then try taking the tips found in the FAQs. And if even then by some chance you aren't happy then give the company a call. They will make it right...just be nice and to the point :)
I say give them a try. Give the FAQs page a try. And see where you lay.

The price and the reliability not to much can go wrong with a single shot and most hit right where you aim. And you don't cry if it gets some dings and scratches.

There were no single shots in my whole family before I was told about GBO. One of my old "Marlin" forum buddies from Tennessee told me about this site before Marlin shut their forum completely down. Well, we Marlin guys (I was fairly new there) were totally accepted by Graybeard. I also remember a post by the Mrs. welcoming us to GBO. That made us feel pretty special to say the least. From the time I started using GBO as my 1st choice in website info for reloading ideas/SA revolver info/ and a Marlin forum, I also became interested in other forums here, especially the NEF centerfire forum because of the Marlin connection. It didn't take me long to realize that these people were very "into" single shot rifles. I'll have to give Tim most of the credit but there have been many others that created an interest for me into a rifle called the Handi.

The low upfront dollars needed to get into Handi's was not what first drew me in. It was members here talking accuracy, reliability, and the ability for everyone to do some simple "tweaking" on their own in order to get them MOA and better. Then the final factor was when I was looking at one in a gunshop where I was working part-time to help the owner and his family out. Someone actually told me I would never get that "thing" to shoot good. Well, I am one who likes a challenge but I said nothing. I walked over to the counter and told the owner I would take the new .223 Handi. He said, "They come in a bull barrel too." I put the Handi back in the rack and ordered one with a bull barrel. I came back to the forums and started reading about Swift and Mueller scopes being used on a lot of these rifles. I owned Bushnell Elites, Sightrons, etc before but never a Swift or a Mueller. I bought a Swift for my first Handi and the rest is all history.

My Handi's are accurate, reliable, and they feel balanced when handling. They pass the three most important demands I have on my firearms. I apologize for the "book" I just wrote but now you have my answer.

Ther have already been a bunch of great reasons posted to call this a great gun but I have a couple more. They are made in the U.S.A. they are a proven, time tested design. the basic action has been around a long time. I'm more of a shotgun guy (though I do have 2 sb2 receivers with .223, .243, .270, 30-06, 357, 45-70 barrels) and I started with a topper being my first real gun. Even though I've had a lot of guns and spent 7 1/2 years in the Army carrying various guns when I hear the word gun the old H&R is what pops into my head. A lot of guys buy one as a beater/truck gun and end up making it there go to gun in short order.
PROUD REDNECK CONSERVATIVE

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

They really are fun and I am happy I have seen the mention here, several times, of the bull barrelled .223 as a first Handi. It is a great way to get into Handi's, the round is versatile, inexpensive even if you do not reload, available everywhere, and with the Handi "Gold Standard" of the Winchester White Box (WWB) Value pack of 40 rounds of 45 grain HP's for about $13 - $14 at Wal Mart or other places most Bull Barrelled Hnadi .223's are capabe of MOA with just a good cleaning and proper scope. If you can try to locate a .223 with an ejector instead of the new extractor, especially if you are planning to do any hunting, there may still be some ejector models out there on shelves.  With the simple measures of proper reloading or factory ammo, a good clean and dry chamber and perhaps a chamber polish IF needed you will eliminate any possible stuck cases. If you are lucky enough to locate an ejector Bull Barrell .223 and want an extractor only (?) it is easily converted in about 5-10 minutes with simple hand tools, not so the other way around. These guns are great, so have fun!!!!...<><.... ;D

MORE QUESTIONS!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

1. Ejectors or extractors? Whar do they have?

2. This going to sound really dumb, but I got this picture of the ideal Handi -rifle that I would like to get or build.  A varmint rifle for Fox & Coyote . Stainless steel barrel. Preferrably a fluted barrel. automatic ejectors, good recoil pad. a stock that is either REAL BLACK WALNUT or some sort of synthetic  that looks like a walnut stock.

Is this possible?

Thanks,
coyote trapper1928

Only in a custom barrel, H&R NEF only makes the fliuted barrels in the 24" bull barreled .204, .223, .22-250 and .243, no stainless. All stainless barrels are regular contour.

Read the thread down the page by Davey, it pretty much covers the difference tween ejector and extractor, the info is also covered in the FAQs which you need to read too! ;) You also need to check out their web page, it has all their offering listed, they just updated it a couple weeks ago.

Because it is the rifle I dreamed of owning in 22 hornet as a child. Now I have one and it is all I had wished of it.      ;D
