Break Open Lever

Hi All -

New member, read many, many months of posts for everything I could on th 25/06 and finally picked one up today for everything from coyotes to mulies.

After getting it home and out of the box, I noticed that the lever used to break open the action seems to be looser than the one on my 223.  I can see it move and hear a slight rattle as I shake it back and forth.  My 223 is an ejector, whereas I believe the 25/06 is an extractor.  Has anyone else noticed this or is this just something new in the last couple years (my 223 had ridges on this lever and seems sturdier in general). Overall, not a deal breaker, I was curious more than anything, really love the look of the Ultra's.

BTW - Great board, I enjoy the wealth of knowledge here.

I've got 2 rifles and 2 shotguns, all with varying amounts of release lever looseness, apparently it's not a problem.

That's normal, it would be a problem if it wasn't loose. You can check latch engagement of the 2 to see if there's much difference, see the barrel fitting instructions in the FAQs. As the .25-06 gets used, it will probably end up pretty close to the same engagement. The 25-06 may also require that you close the action firmly until it gets broke in as the latch and latch shelf get to know each other and mate well. ;)

Sounds almost dirty, doesn't it!! ;D

I think you are right about the latch engagement 'shake-down'. Probably this is part of the reason that some Handi's need allot of rounds thru them before they achieve optimal accuracy.

Still hesitating on the 45-70. The Marlins stiill look so good.

It's also why a lot of new Handis pop open, new rifles need a little more force to get them to lock up good.

Thanks Tim!

I look forward to grabbing some ammo and having the latch and latch shelf get to know each other very well.  Dirty....probably, but anything to keep the rifles happy!  ;)
