Broken Extractor
« on: December 25, 2006, 06:28:21 PM »
Just bought a Handi Rifle in .223 w/ a bull barrel, haven't even had it a month.  I really like the rifle but the L shaped piece from the extractor (this is the part held in with a big pin and a small pin) split in two right in the middle of the larger pin.  Anyone else run into this problem?

I am confused on the whole history of extractor vs. ejector.  Are they currently manufacturing ejectors or extractors?  Rifle SN: NW 282992
When getting an additional barrel can you specify that you want ejector?  I want to get a barrel in .204 Ruger but want an ejector since it will be used for hunting.

The .204 was never offered with an ejector, I bought mine new in 2004 when it first came out, it has an extractor. Current production rifles, with few exceptions, have extractors, it's not an option to get an ejector unless they happen to have one at the time of the orde that is part of old inventory. If you want, you can call H&R after the first of the year and get a replacement sent, or have them repair it and cover shipping costs when you ship it back for a barrel. If you would like the trigger at 3-4lbs if it isn't already, that would also be a good time to have a free trigger job done too! ;)

Tim thanks for the info.  Any idea why they went away from ejectors?  I had read the recent review in Rifle magazine. The author was talking about catching the case as the ejector kicked em out.  Which calibers have them?

I will call and have them send the part.  Planning on sending it in for the new barrel in February and will get the trigger done then.  Also want to get a 45-70 barrel.

They had complaints of sticking brass first for which they increased spring tension, then they or their lawyers decided that flying brass was a hazard, so they switched to extractors, they're in their second generation of extractors, from your description, I think you have the same 2nd gen extractor as Tackleberry's in the thread below.

FWIW, ejectors are preferred by most shooters and especially hunters, but we have extractors, so that's what we have to live with, unfortunately.
