Finding the right load, 223
« on: December 20, 2006, 02:40:16 AM »
well it has taking me a while but i have finally found a load my handi likes. My handi is over 8 years old and it has been sitting in the cabnet for 5 of those years. I never could find a load it liked. I tried factory and some hand loads and nothing would give me what i wanted and 1.5 and 2 inches was not what i wanted. So i put it in the cabnet and forgot about it. until last weekend. i loaded up some 52 seirra match hp with 24.0 grains of 3031. At 75 yards ( all the range i had) It shot a groups of .276 of a inch( that is subtract the bullet size) or a little less then a .5 outside to outside. I am very pleased with my handi. One other question can you order a new handi with a extra barrel or do you have to buy one and then send it in to have it fitted.

Thats good shooting. My rifle likes the50 grn Nosler CT ballistic silver tips over 3031 and the 45 grn WW white boxloads. As for your extra barrel question, I have often wondered the same thing. Maybe we'll both get an answ here.

You have shown patience in your "load" search. It is my opinion too many give up too soon. I am not talking about the members here at GBO but locals I know who just quit on a rifle or handgun because it can't shoot. I partly bought my first Handi because someone told me .. "you'll never get that thing to shoot good." Hmmm ... I did. It took more work than my best shooting .223 (a Savage 10FP) but it was just as satisfying or more so.

My Handi's in .223 liked the 50 gr Nosler BT with Varget best.

Great job!

Good shooting, all of you!! To answer your question, other than combos that "were" listed on the web site, the only way to get an extra barrel from H&R is to send a frame in.......and you can get multiple barrels at that time if you want. ;) They're supposed to be offering the missing combos in the near future, about 1000 total in different combinations that are rimfire/centerfire.

.227" groups are super...congrats...You'll need to talk with the fine folks at NEF about having them fit extra barrels to your Handi..You can give them the serial number and they'll let you know what they can fit..and what they have in stock...Some barrels have been taking a little longer than others to get lately...

Man thats great! My best load in 223 handi so far is 24.5grs 3031 with 50gr v-max.Never measured it till I read yours and it was .450 for 3 shot group.I also use 3031 in 22-250 with 33grs and 50gr sierra.Bet you are glad you tried one more time!

first off:   good shooting.    my compliments to you.

secondly, and less important since you're already shooting well:   why not get a new frame and so on with your next barrel.   that's what i've done.   i never send in a rifle for a barrel.  i buy the whole thing, tune it in with handloads, and then grab the one i want when it's time to go!   no waiting for the factory to send me back what i've already paid for, no wearing out of parts on one frame doing duty with a handful of barrels....etc....etc.....etc.

at $179 + tax for my last Handi' i think i've done alright so far doing it that way.

just my sincere opinion,

hello..i think safety sheriff is on to something...1st i'm a newbie handi rifle guy...i have two... purchased my 1st 7 month's ago...having for some unknown reason a attraction for single shot's...a itch i just had to scratch !!! i pondered between a encore or handi's...my decision was for the price & so...so...performance i had heard from on both... to be honest...i felt i could build load's for two handi's at about the price of one encore & not have to monkey with swapping barrel's & having to be concerned with p.o.i shift's ect...due to loosening & tightening ect...maybe i'm off ?? i like to just grab a gun & know how it shoot's which take's time of course...maybe folk's with more experiance in this than myself may offer different thought's ?? whew !! i'm out of breath !! good luck...

Mky .223 is the most frustrating gun that I have ever owned.  I have spent lots of money on reloading components trying to find a consistent load.  I finally settled on thd 50 gr. Hornady Spire Point and 27.5 grains of Varget.  The Sierra 53 grain HP match is great also.  Recently, it seems like I am all over the place again.  I just tried bedding it with silicone.  Before I shoot any more, I have to get a different scope as it took a bad crash and I don't think it survived.  I am going to shoot the remaining bullets that I have and if it I can't get more consistency, I am considering getting rid of the gun.   On the up side, the gun is indestructible and a great gun to haul around in the truck for trapping etc.  I have owned a lot of guns and never had this kind of trouble getting them to shoot consistently well.  The .22 mag Handi that I have shoots as good as any rifle going.
