Will changing barrels change POI?
« on: December 17, 2006, 06:55:26 AM »
I have only one stock and alternate three different barrels on it.  I know I am deprived.  When I switch barrels aback and forth does this greatly effect I POI?  In other words if I have my .223 sighted in and take it off and shoot my 45/70 a while and then put the .223 back in will it still be sighted in well enough to take out and shoot varmints?

The only variable in switching barrels on one frame and forend is forend screw torque, I prefer to use a torque screwdriver, then it's always the same. ;)

What i did was to change all of my forarm screws to a -- not a + this way all i have to do is make sure the blade slot is running with the barrel .

Every rifle has it's own rules. Have you tried it? Seems to me this answer would be pretty easy to find in an afternoon at the range.

The only problem with that is it doesn't adjust for changes in compression of the forend and humidity affects. It's close, obviously close enough for hunting purposes, but the fellas that shoot benchrest matches that want consistent accuracy and POI, all use specific torque on their rifle stock bolts, the only way to do that is with a torque sensing tool. ;)

I haven't noticed any shift in POI when I switched between 3 different barrels in one shooting session...I used 2 different 25-06 barrels and a 338-06A-Square barrel on my 1 frame... I do make sure as what been said to have the same amount of torque on the forearm screw...Each of the barrels fit a little different in the forearm...and you should have already noticed this..Having it bedded for one barrel..most likely won't allow the same bedding with another..even using the o-rings one will get a different fit each time...so..pay attention to the wood to metal fit on the sides of the barrel channel...One can sand open the barrel channel up to their largest diameter barrel...leaving plenty of space on the sides...This will ensure no barrel contact with the smaller diameter barrels when switching between them..This is what I do...

Not having a torque screwdriver I did a search on the Internet and can’t seem to find one that doesn’t cost more than a Handi Rifle.  Anyone have any suggestions??
