CZ 550 American v Ruger
« on: December 15, 2006, 01:12:42 PM »
Ive posted before about wanting a rifle in 6.5x55 Swede and tought the only factory rifle that was chambered in it was the Ruger M77. Ive since discovered that CZ makes the 550 American in 6.5 also. I know nothing about the CZ but own a Ruger. Which riifle is better? I know the Ruger uses a Mauser action but what does is the CZ similar to? Also with rifle would be more accurate and reliable?

The Ruger may use a mauser action but the CZ IS a mauser action so to speak

1 The CZ will cost about the same as the Ruger

2 The CZ will in all likelyhood shoot better out of the box than the ruger will after just about every accuracy mod you can think of.

3  The single set trigger on the CZ is the best trigger you can get on a production rifle (Sorry tikka sako guys)

4 Both will be tough as nails reliable.

I recently made the mistake of buying a 77/22 Hornet instead of a CZ527 Hornet. I knew better but I did it anyway :'( now I must live with the disappointment. So please save a target from a terrible fate. Buy the CZ ;)

I love CZs. My 452 is joy to shoot. I considered the CZ550FS in 6.5x55, but it was too heavy, even with the 20.5 inch barrel. The 550 american is even heavier at 8lbs. So I went with the Tikka, which has a 1MOA guarantee, and the old reliable 8" twist.

I believe the 8" is usually needed to stabilize the 160s. I think the CZ has an 8.6 twist. I'm sure that would work with 140s, you would have to ask for other's experience with the 160s.

I vote for the CZ. I really like the rugers but for the money the ruger stinks. A lot of people get about 3" groups on average with the rugers. If you like them like I do it is best to get it rebarreled befor you even shot the thing and save your ammo money.

Ruger. I've always had good accuracy from Ruger. 220 Swift 77V - 3 shot groups touching at 100yds. I get 3" 3 shot groups from my 7 mag laying prone  - at 300 yards. Other than touching the trigger up on mine to reduce creep, which is very easy to do on Ruger, that's all I've done to it. A few years ago I had a 300 mag that was no big deal to get loads shooting right around 1" at 100 yds for 3 shot groups. I like the controlled round feed, fixed blade ejector, 3 position model 70 style saftey, and the integral scope mount of the Rugers.

What about the strenght of the stock on the CZ with say the 458 Lott or the 416 Rigby. I know Ruger makes strong stocks but I have my douts about the CZ It doesn't have those cross bolts for strenght.

Jro45 -- If you look in the CZ section of this forum that very subject is covered. In short, however, yes, the stocks do need to have the action glass bedded and many say have crossbolts installed. I do not know why CZ does not address this issue, however, it only seems to have issues with the really heavy-recoiling rifles. I don't own a heavy-recoiling rifle, but have read where stocks have cracked under heavy recoil without the glassbedding and crossbolts, or just glassbedding. The issue on this topic, however, is with the CZ 550 in a 6.5x55, which is not a heavy-recoiling rifle. I have never heard of any stocks cracking with the lower-recoiling rifles. In answer to this question. I owned a Ruger Mark II in 7x57mm. For some reason I still cannot explain, the accuracy just went south on me ... same load, same bullets, same rifle, same shooting bags, same everything, but not the same accuracy. My one-inch grouping rifle turned into one going three or more inches, and at three inches, Ruger said that was "acceptable" accuracy. To cut this story off at a decent lenght, I sold the Ruger and bought a  CZ, in the same caliber, 7x57mm. Accuracy has been exceptional in the CZ. It cycles as smooth as a baby's butt, has a beautiful stock, had an easily-adjustable trigger with a set feature. I just like it ... period. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Tom Purdom

CZ now crossbolts the heavy recoiling calibers. Make sure that you get a current production rifle.

Yes, I spoke to CZ... all the heavy kickers have 2x cross bolts and guess what the good news is.... THIER PRICE DIDN'T GO UP !!!! :)

I placed an order for a 416 rigby last riday, and specifically told them that I do not want the one with out the cross bolts..
