scope for 22-250
« on: December 14, 2006, 11:11:47 PM »
I have a TCR chambered in 22-250. I am trying to decide on a new scope for it. I will be using it for general shooting and the occasional varmint ( mainly coyotes and groundhogs). The two scopes I have my eye on are the Leupold Vari -X I 4-12x40 or the Burris Fullfield 3-9x40. I chose these two because I don't want a bulky adjustable objective on this rifle. Any opinions on these choices, or other suggestions in the $ 250 range?

I have a VX-II 6x18 AO on my Ruger No. One in .22-250, and it is a great match for the cartridge.  Actually the 18 power is a bit high for the field but works great for load development at the range.   I usually have it set on 12-14x if there is much mirage rolling across the shooting fields.  You won't be handicapped with a 12x maximum.  The Burris is a fine scope but you may find you want more than 9x for some shooting situations.

Of the two you mentioned, I'd go with the Leupold.  If you want another suggestion for a scope that won't break the bank you might consider the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40, although it does have the adjustable objective.  I have a new Handi-rifle ordered and on the way chambered in 22-250 and have also ordered a Burris BlackDiamond 6-24X50 w/ballsitic Mildot reticle.  I had to sell another rifle and scope in order to buy that scope though.

The .22-250 is a caliber that will take varmints out to 400 yds, if you do your part and have the right optics. I've used a 6-24x on mine for years, and like it a lot. I often dial it down in the 16x range, but being able to have the ability to run it up to 24x has been a nice asset.
