25-06 and 223?
« on: December 11, 2006, 11:31:20 AM »
I am considering buying one of these after the 1st of the year, and ordering a barrel later. I have several questions. I prefer longer heavier barrels.  Cost is always a concerne. Which should I buy as a complete rifle? If I buy the 24" 223 bull ultra, Will the 25-06 accept the same fore-end. If I go that way I can have a lot of cheap practice before I buy the 2506 barrel. Also, I've heard lots of stories about many calibers shooting well, but no-one brags on how well the 25-06 shoots. Does anyone have any tales to tell abou the 25-06? capt david

Get the 25-06.  Mine is the most accurate gun I have ever owne, handi or otherwise.  I love the range of bullets that can be used in it for varmints to deer.  The same forend will work.  Get it and love it!

But be warned, two is not going to be enough! ;D ;D ;D

I had an ultra rifle in 25-06 and it would group about 1.25in.at 100 yds.with 115gr.Winchester Ballistic Silvertips.I regret selling that rifle. It had a 26in.barrel,low recoil,a decent trigger, and was completely unmodified.I had a 45-70 fit to that frame as well and ordererd the forend for ir extra.I don't know if the forend for the one will work on both or not,but I can recommend the 25-06.BTW out to 300-350 yds. it is deadly on whitetail.

As has been said, it's one of the best, a great shooter with factory ammo, mine shoots the Hornady 117gr BTSP and Federal 115gr NP into well less than an inch, first 2 shots almost touching, usually if I don't blow it!! :-[

Too bad the search feature has been tits up for weeks. You would find many, many "brags" on the Ultra 25-06 Remingtons. Including those of mine.

My Ultra will deliver three shoot groups, both factory 117/120s and handloaded 117 Sierras, into a cloverleaf.

Mine has been my go-to rifle for antelope, whites and mules since 2000. And here in Montana we get to put our rifles thru extensive testing in the field.

Go get it and kill something!

;D Man do I agree witht the posts here. I ahd and sold a 25-06 that would shoot under an inch all day long. Kicked my self for getting rid of it. Well my better 1/2 aksed me my Christmas wishes  a new Ultra in 25-06 and same gun in 30-06 next will be a Varmint in 223, I topped both 06's with 3-10X44 Millett Buck Golds. I'll have a 280 Rem and 35 Whelen before i am done and if I can convince my self i need one a Target model in 45-70. Best bang for the buck on the market along with the ATR and Savage 200. I'll keep shooting and buying these little rifles until I am to old to hunt and shoot. Jess

Since cost is a concern I would get whatever is cheaper first if you can find one cheaper than the other. The barrels are the same price. Yes the fore-end will fit either. I have bolth and mine shoot great.

Actually, Ithink  I'm going to buy the 223 first. That way I can practice with the cheaper ammo. I'll order 25-06 over the summer. capt david

Unless, Is it possible for my gunsmith, who I buy most of my stuff through, to order both gun and extra barrel at the same time from the factory? That might save some time/headache.

So far as I know, only wholesalers/distributors, IE Sports South, Lipseys,  can buy direct from the factory, a gunsmith would order from the wholesaler/dist, and then only for complete rifles.

I bought a 223 handirifle in 1999 and bought the 25-06 two years ago . Both are shooters . I use the 25-06 strictly for filling Crop Damage Permits and the 223 for woodchucks . I bought complete guns rather than interchange the barrels . I also have the 50 cal Huntsman and the Turkey gun with extra full choke .
