Remington 700 Action Issue
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:16:59 AM »
Just bought a model .223 Remington 700, and am experiencing an issue with the bolt. I am more of a shotgun guy than a rifle, own two other Model 700, and love them. The bolt on the .223 works great with no ammo in it, but as soon as I put in a shell, it is almost impossiple to close the handle dwon. Anyone else ever experience this? I have used several maunfacuters ammo, FEderal remington, Balck Hills and it all is the same. Any ideas what I should do? I have shot less than 30 rounds thruy the unit.
Thanks

Sounds like you got a short chamber.  To be sure, (and to be talking from a position of knowledge) blacken an entire cartridge with magic marker and close the bolt on the round.  Don't fire it.  Once you remove the round, where the case is rubbed should tell you what the problem is.  Then it's a call to Remington.  One tip: if you need to return the rifle to Remington and you've already adjusted the trigger, DO NOT SEND THE TRIGGER IN WITH THE RIFLE.  Just remove your trigger and send the rifle in with a note that you had removed the trigger.   Otherwise, Remington will arbitarily replace your trigger and charge you.
They'll do the same thing if you have a aftermarket trigger.
