CW Longshot got 1751fps out of his 500gr .500S&W loads, so that's pretty close to .50 Alaskan data. ;)

325gr isn't a big, heavy bullet in a 45/70 or a .500 for that matter
... ;) ;) ;) A 300 grain bullet is big in just about anything your going to shoot...May not be the biggest or heaviest for the caliber......but...just sit it up along side any 338 cal bullet and under...(...It's still one heckuva big bullet...especially at 2450fps...:o :o ;) ;)...)

The question cannot be answered with anything containing 325gr. Sorry.

If you want to discuss the topic you brought up on another thread I think you would get a lot of interesting responses.

Grizz...I posted this because of what you said about the 325 grainer not being a big bullet on this topic..It just struck me a little funny...and my reply was kinda like a joke...see the winks...Most folks who haven't never seen any of the .458 bullets...the first time they do...they usually say something like.....  "Ohhhhh my Gawd...:o :o :o :o :o ....are you hunting elephants" ??? :D :D :D :D

Thanks Mac, don't know why I sounded so cranky about it! Time of day of something. You're right about reactions to those big bullets. Most folks who aren't familiar probably don't comprehend what they're about. I am still amazed when I line up the bullets I load and have used in the past and see the progression to the 525s I am currently fond of shooting. They make the .357s look pretty skimpy, and I remember when that was a big deal. So you're right it is pretty funny. Sorry if I went off half-cocked, as my Dad would have said.

This might be a little off topic, but I got a giggle from it.......

I picked up both the Princess's youth SPORTSTER yesterday at my favorite gunsmith/gunshop.  A couple of older gentlemen were in there drinking up the coffee, when Dan (gunsmith/shopowner) said here comes another singleshot lover.  Well, that kept me in the store for about an hour telling my likes and whys and calibers.  I told them I had the 500 S&W barrel and was going to send it off for the 45/70 BC barrel and have Dan cut it down a little for balance.  And I said I wish IL would do what LA did, allow larger rifle calibers to used for deer.  Both the older gentleman just busted out laughing!  They said they have been using their Handis in 45/70 since IL allowed muzzleloading during the shotgun season!  Both have been checked by the local and state Game Wardens, and they didn't even noticed it was a rifle!  Seems that both men wear a blaze orange hunting vest and put in 20ga slugs in the outside shell holder.  Their 45/70 shells are in the pockets.  They said everyone assumes that they are using a 20ga TRACKER 2 or a HUNTSMAN during ML season!

They also said that since MARLIN took over NEF, the quality has went up three fold.  And I have to agree.  My 17M2/22lr SPORTSTER and the youth one I picked for the Princess's have great triggers.  They aren't hair triggers, but I don't have any creep in either.

And a little note on 325gr bullets.  The largest bullet I used to take a deer was a 295gr out of my 41 magnum!  I'm glad that didn't require a second shot!

Lefty
I'll be needing that for squirrels and such.....

I ain't never been lost in my life, been a might confused for a month or so.....

Pilgram, are you sure you know how to skin grizzer bear.....

I personally hope those 2 scofflaws get grabbed by the proper authorities. Anyone who willingly and knowingly breaks the hunting and shooting laws hurts all of the legal shooters and hunters. If they ever shot someone or something with those 45-70's because of the extended range over a shotgun slug, or for any other reason, there will be heck to pay for all real sportsman and hunters, and we would all suffer. We all owe our sport the respect and support it deserves. It is jerks like that that are ruining and limiting our ability to get out in the woods to hunt or shoot or to ranges to just shoot. Do they actually think they can shoot a deer with the 45-70 that they could not have shot with a USH? They are just spolied brats that do not deserve to have thier hunting priviliges. I do wish I was there when they made those foolish self incriminating statements, They are fools as well as criminals and someone should confront them and tell them so!!!....<><....Merry Christmas!!! >:(

lefty...I know how you feel...I used to lived in ILL ...most of my life anyway...and moved across to Mo. when I got married 5 years ago......I hunted down in Shawnee area...and southern Ill for the bulk of it ...and have seen many locals yokels down there using centerfire rifles...Mostly on Federal land...and usually not on State conservation areas...It got so bad..that I bought a full blaze orange coveralls...many down that way take what they call " Sound Shots "...They blast away at something they heard moving..and can't see..either in the brush or because it was to dark to see..... :o :o :o Very scary...It seems it's a way of life for most of them...and the local authorities look the other way for their friends...It's simply nuts down there during deer season... >:(  It's a beuatiful area to hunt...lots of wildlife...and it's not all bad...but a-lot of areas are like this..and just too many nut cases running around with guns in a-lot of it..

Quick, bumping this to the top and reading it again just makes me wish even more that I was there to call those jerks just what they are to thier faces, and that would be gentle, since I really would like to give them a dope slap and take away thier guns and hunting priviledges....<><.... :)

No problem Quick, as a matter of fact I'm glad you did, hopefully it will be just the impetus someone may need to take a stand and speak up and out loud to slob "hunters", criminals really, like those spoken of in the above post that used illegal weapons during hunting season and then bragged about it in front of others. It is bums like that that are ruining hunting for all of us. Call me shy and retiring if you want, but my father always told me a man has to stand for what's right or he gives up the the right to be called a man and becomes a coward....<><.... >:(

Actually I was in the chat room when I was looked for it and didn't read the thread to refresh my memory of what the "other" content of the thread was. But as you pointed out, it will allow some of the new members that didn't see it to be enlightened. ;)
