New caliber from Ruger
« on: December 07, 2006, 01:51:09 PM »
Just read an article about the new .375 Ruger. The article claims that it duplicates the .375 H&H, but in a 30/06 length action. Same case capacity in a short, stubby little thing. Sounds like something I'd like to have in a M77. Anyone else interested?

You really need to get out and look around a bit here, there are several threads on the .375 Ruger in the Big Bore forum.  :D

Gee, sorry. How could I bring up a new caliber in a bolt gun on a bolt gun forum. I guess I don't have your kind of time to sit at a computer. I'll delete it. Wouldn't want to waste space here.

No need to delete it, just fine to have one more thread on it. In fact from the magazine article in the new rag I got yesterday they say the actual case capacity is GREATER than that of the old H&H round not just equal to it.

This round does seem to have a lot of interest for folks so no reason to delete the thread, I'm sure it will generate additional traffic.

I pointed it out for you so you and others could read more about it, there's a lot of info available about it in those threads that's been gleaned in mags and on the net by lots of folks that are excited about it just like yourself. ;)

I wouldn't delete this thread either

It appears that this new .375 Ruger does have some interest, but I wonder how long it will live.  The good 'ole H&H (of which I have) has been around, as well are rifles chambered for it, for about a hundred years or so.  Only time will tell.

The trend seems to be toward shorter cartridges, with more velocity, in lighter rifles with shorter actions. I haven't bought into the WSM or the WSSM frenzy, but this one has peaked my interest. It looks like a bigger, fatter .350 Rem Mag, my favorite rifle cartridge. And as a bonus, in my favorite bolt action rifle, the Ruger M77. If it catches on, I'm sure that all the other manufacturers will have one out quickly. I have absolutely no use for one, but I want one. ;D

I hope it doesn't go the way of the .350 Rem Mag, and become popular forty years from now. Another cartridge way ahead of it's time?

Here we go,

I am not very excited about it, dunno.... I looked at hornady's "hot" loaded ammo for the 375 ruger and compared it with thier "hot" loaded 375 h&h (I believe they call them heavy mags).... the 375 h&h loads were a little faster, I think like 150 fps faster.

I guess comparing these two together is like comparing the 300 win mag vs the 300 WSM (which I don't have but I think its a cool caliber), and I don't think the WSM sales will ever reach its "longer" brother's sales.  Just my Opinion

wait.... I take that back.... they are not 150 fps different.... they are like right next to each other, maybe 40-50 fps difference at the most (which is nothing)

Looking at the Ruger site, it appears that they have utilized the shorter length of the new 375 Ruger cartridge to allow them to lighten the "Hawkeye" firearms taking the cartridge relative to 375 H&H firearms. IMO, good for carrying but bad for shooting. I like the weight and heft of my Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in .375 H&H. It is a little much for carrying all day, but the scoped rifle has the weight that allows one to become a proficient shot through non flinching practice with the 375 H&H using all bullet weights. This will be an interesting one to watch. Too bad Ruger doesn't come out with a semi-auto for their shorter 375 Ruger cartridge.

You're right, but there are a lot of popular rifles and handguns that are good for carrying and bad for shooting. The titanium frame S&W .44 Mag, the Ruger Alaskan, etc.

A Ruger Deerfield in .375.? I'd be the first to buy one.

I expect both the Alaskan and the African models to both get a lot of attention.
