223 1in9" bullets
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:08:49 AM »
I have a new 1in9" twist 22" heavy barrel Handi.
So far I have only shot CHEAP ammo to break in and get brass.
Want to work up some loads.
What bullets are you guys reloading for these barrels.

The 64g psp pmc shot much better than some FREE 55g fmj pmp
but I kind of think Quality could be more of an issue than bullet grains.

I own a Savage in 223.  Absolutely loves Sierra 69 gr HPBT's in the 1:9 twist barrel.

I am using:

Lake City or Winchester brass
AA2230-C or IMR4198 powder
WW standard primer
Seating bullet close to the lands (0.020 off the lands).

Work your load up, start at the bottom of course.

Don't plan on the 1:9" twist .223 Handi barrel shooting the heavier bullets that other 1:9" rifles do well with, their track record here  shows they don't, but they shoot the 40gr-50gr very well. The 64gr Win PP and 63gr Sierra Varminter #1370 shoot well in the 1:12" H&R barrels, so I would expect them to do well in the 1:9" barrels also, as you've seen with the 64gr Win do in the PMC ammo, which is no longer made btw, PMC is out of business. :( If H&R would deepen the rifling in the 1:9" barrels, they might just improve their ability to shoot the heavier bullets, but they way they are, that hasn't happened yet from all reports so far.

quickdtoo,

You say they doo shoot 40g and 50g well.
I would prefer them but I didn't Know if they would work with the twist.
Won't shoot anything bigger than coyote.

Yup, most everyone, not me, mine is a 1:12",  has reported the 1:9" .223 H&R/NEFs shoot the lighter bullets great, but they don't shoot the heavier bullets that you would expect them to do well with, if the search worked, I'd point you to numerous posts on the subject. Try the 40gr-50gr loads! ;)

One of the threads on the Win whitebox 45grJHP compared how they shot in the 1:12" to 1:9" barrels, they did great in both!! Unfortunately, like all ammo, recently went up to $16 a box of 40. :(
