Scope for B/C 45/70
« on: December 06, 2006, 05:15:41 PM »
Anyone want to recommend a good low power scope with plenty of eye relief for a Buffalo Classic 45/70?

I was shooting my Mosin Nagant 91/30 that I just recently scoped and my B/C today and after shooting the M/N that has what feels like a 20 lb. trigger pull I switched to my B/C that has what feels like a 3 lb. trigger pull and got popped good by the scope.  :'(

I need a scope that will have plenty of eye relief.  I think 4 power would suffice.  Thanks

Jack, the Bushnell Banner1½-4½x32  has 4" of eye relief and is touted as being one of the best buys in budget optics for a .45-70 by the levegun boys and MO. I have one on one of my .45-70 Handis, it works great!! If you want more eye relief, the 3-9x40 IER Banner has 6"!!

Do you have one of the 3-9x40 IER Banners on any of your rifles?  I have always been a fan of the 3X9 scopes on most everything except my varmint rifles.  I have to be honest, after today I want to get as far away from the scope as possible.   :)

No, I don't, but I think Lik2hunt may have one from this post he made. I may be getting one for the .375H&H Encore if the 4-12x Luepold doesn't work out!!

I did some checking and the scope I have on my B/C now gives me about 2 1/2 inches relief.  I would think 4 inches would be sufficient.  I tried 6 inches and it seemed like a lot.  What relief do you prefer on your 45/70's?

The other scopes that I've used on the .45-70s are the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 with 3½" of eye relief, which is the bare minimum, and an S&W 1½-6x38 Shotgun scope with 5" of eye relief. When I was doing load work comparisons tween the 22" and 32" .45-70 barrels on my last range trip, I got a couple close calls with the 10x40 Bushy, no blood, but too close cuz I crawled the stock just a tad too much!

quickdtoo, thank you for sending me the e-mail about the 500 s&w handi rifle, per this site, what scope rings should i mount on my 500 rifle, i have the factory base mounted on rifle, also which scope would you go with, i do not want a eye hit, most deer and hog shots will be under 100 yards, i have a 30-06 handi rifle for the longer green field shots, which ring should i put on this rifle, i do not like weaver rings, thank you ro

Welcome aboard, ro!! Any of the scopes mentioned for the .45-70, except the 10x40 Bushy would work fine on the .500S&W, I just put a Bushnell 2½x20 shotgun scope on my .500 Handi, I used medium Burris Signature Zees to mount it as I use them whenever I can, but there are lots of good rings that will serve you well, Leupold QRW or PRWs work well for many here too. Many also use the Leupold Rifleman rings that are sold at Walmart, I have a pair that I got on a used Handi, they look like they would be fine and they're priced right at less than $15 if I remember correctly.

The size and position of the power ring and ocular bell will determine the height of rings needed as the hammer will hit if the rings are too low. How much to you want to spend on the scope, then we can make some recommendations based on that.

For that money, I would put it on a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33, I have 2 of these scopes, it would serve you well on the .500. The Nikon Buckmasters would be another one to consider for just a little less money,, I have 2 of these also, great glass, but not quite as much eye relief as the Leupold.

I have a Nikon Monarch 2x7 on my 45/70 and my brother has a Nikon Pro Staff 2x7 on his 45/70. Both have plenty of eye relief and we shoot the level 2 handloads.

I was looking at a Nikon tonight at my local Walmart.  I believe it was around $99.00.
