Need advice 280ai encore or remington
« on: April 24, 2003, 05:06:50 AM »
Do I order a 280ai from one of the custom t/c shops (vvcg, bb, fox ridge, etc) or do I have my remington 30/06 rebarreled to a 280ai with a shilen barrel?  Both would be more or less about the same cost.

 strato, call SSK and go with a 280 JDJ. It's blown out straight with a 60 degree shoulder. 120 gr. bullets at almost 3000fps out of my 15.5" barrel. Tough to fireform, but if careful, it is a hoot to shoot.
Jeff

i.e., 120 gr. load of 68 gr. RL22, I think. Don't have my load sheet handy. It's a "one up" on the Ackley

Chris,
Thanks for the feed back...that was the direction I was leaning twards too.  You guys really seem to like those fox ridge barrels.  I have never tried one but at about $75 less expensive than the custom houses, its worth a try.
Thanks

Jeff,
You mentioned the cases may be a bit difficult to form.  What sort of problems were you having?  If you are getting 3000 fps out of a 15" barrel, immagine what I would get out of a 26"!  What type of accuracy is this round capable of.  Looks like there are 2 new encore barrels in my future.

strato, see my post on the newest topic about the 280JDJ. It is accurate "as all get-out" but the severe fireforming of the case is a problem, at least to me. I see that I may have to try 2 fireforming sessions to get it right. I lost some to split necks and case separation. It is still a work in progress. But, if I give up,  I have an as new 15.5 incher that was turned into a "SSK Kromed" with dies and loaded ammo and brass available. Has the unique "arrestor" on it and T'SOB with three rings.

Take new .30-06 brass and run it into you JDJ die, just enough of the neck to close. This will leave a shoulder on the necdk to engage the te .280 neck. This will give you a nice reform on one try. At least it works on my .280 AI. I get 3200 out of a 140 in a 26" barrel.

Hi-Wall, the 280 case is just a "scrunch" longer, so that should help prevent case head problems. Jeff
